Was working the grill for my girls last night but recorded and watched it late. Some impressive stuff, some not so impressive. Here's my thoughts after giving it a look...

Kizer sucks and won't make this team.

There, that's out of the way. Kumerow, Davis, Geronimo, Shepherd, and of course Davante Adams all looked just dynamite at WR. Tonyan also great night receiving. Sternberger looked WAY bigger than I thought he would, but the guy got nothing thrown his way. Jimmy Graham looked alright with a couple of nice receptions down middle of the field. Dexter Williams is indeed going to be special in this offense. Both for his breakaway shots and for anything red zone. Looks like he might turn out to be another steal from the late rounds. Holy sh!t does he have a fantastic ability to float across the line, make one cut and go north/south. Very decisive. Also, RB Tra Carson was quite a surprise! This kid has power, decisive, and knows how to run the rock. WOW! Nice pick up from JAX.

I should really emphasize the great night both Trevor Davis and Jake Kumerow had. They both made one spectacular catch after another, in tight coverage. BTW, few to none of the completions went uncontested. Our secondary played tight, but these two were acrobats out there. Davante Adams too. Stellar catches. Geronimo is the sh!t. That guy is going to have a great year. I can see it. He looks perfectly poised for it, like he belongs, and he made a couple great catches in what looked like an effortless stride, just like Davante. Wow has Geronimo Allison developed nicely. You can tell Rodgers is going to love hitting him, and he's got the quicks and speed to take anything to the house.

Vitale??? Exsqueeze me? Did someone say Vitale??? Holy F, this kid is good.

Didn't get to watch the OL a ton, but came away seeing Yosh Nijman does need development. He can hold his own and had some good moments, but others where he could be more aware to continue playing to the whistle. Guess that is the needs further development part of his equation, but, a massive LT/RT. Needs to add even more weight though to put the whole package together, like most rookie OL. Jenkins looked pretty solid, but didn't have time to focus on his play at LG too much. Hell, I'm pretty sure it was LG... Adam Taylor looks good and playing like he did when healthy in 2017. Our 1s looked pretty damned good, but, tough to really say given intersquad play.

Manny Wilkins seems destined to make this roster. I mean, he has that presence, and his play was decent. Hall dropped a great dump off pass from him. Will be interesting to see Wilkins in preseason action with live bullets. Looks way more mature to handle the backup QB role than Boyle or Kizer.

On D I was impressed with Tony Brown, especially his pick 6. This kid can play. I flew back from NY in June sitting next to he and his daughter. She was a sweet kid, around 2-3 yrs old, and he seems cool - could tell he was a good Dad... Nice guy and what a player. Tony Brown is going to be dynamite for us. He always seems to be at the right spot at the right time.

King looked alright, made some plays on the ball. Alexander looked like he was having a bit of an off night, but made a great tackle in run support. Granted, the entire D seemed to VERY mindful of not blowing up their teammates on O. For instance, some of those receptions, great receptions BTW, would never have been completions as they should have been called sacks. I know Montravius Adams had at least one, Ty Summers had at least 3, Z Smith and Gary at least a couple, and I believe Lancaster if I remember correctly. I know I'm forgetting some. A lot of great stunts and blitzes up the middle. Even saw Markus Jones in, and he looks way bigger than I had expected. The kid could do something. I think he blew up Light on a bull rush but lost his footing immediately after and went down. Had he kept his balance he might have gotten home. Had to be nervous. He was in on STs to block FGs too, though they weren't going full, not even close. Thought it was interesting he wound up there this quickly.

The D just looks super solid. Almost like they were playing 3/4 speed in a majority of spots to not injure anyone. Smart. LaFleur laid down the law on that apparently. BTW, for completeness sake for those who couldn't see it, LaFleur said in his presser he thought the refs were far too generous to the O, in defense of his defense.... er, uh... well, you get it. And that was so true. Again, this D was very determined not to blow up their teammates, and a bunch of those great receptions I mentioned earlier really should have been sacks by the D. Our pass rush got home a lot and just held up, rather than trying to be the practice hero. Very smart by LaFleur to control that.

Hollman made a nice tip for an INT. He looks like another late round steal, playing with that kind of acumen this early as a rookie. Savage was out. Amos looked alright, but again, dialed down. Raven Greene is going to be great for this D too. He made some plays. Kabion Ento also made a couple of nice plays in coverage. This secondary is looking pretty freaking deep. Good to see. AND, they are going to be reaping some rewards this season with our pass rush.

Ficken had a rough night up until the last booming FG. I have no idea how long it was, but must have been a long one, as LaFleur was pretty happy about it in his presser. Ficken did make a couple shorter ones though too. Think he missed on 3 from +50 if I remember correctly, or two of those and a 40+...? That last one, damn LaFleur was effusive in his praise, making me think Crosby might be on his way out if he can't recover quickly. That was my impression.

Did I mention Aaron Rodgers? No. Because I didn't have to. He's the best. Fire.

That's all I got. Cheers my friends!

Demovsky on the WR competition:

The wide receiver picture is starting to take shape, and there seems to be little doubt that Jake Kumerow and Trevor Davis belong as the Nos. 4 and 5 (behind the starting trio of Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison) after what they showed in Saturday's Family Night practice at Lambeau Field........

Don't count out rookie Darrius Shepherd for the potential No. 6 spot, which could leave last year's fourth-round pick J'Mon Moore on the outside looking in.

Don't disagree with that analysis.

Trophies,

Looks like you counted at least 7 sacks meaning if so the offensive line really had some problems.

Just too many sacks.

Wide receiver is going to be tough.

Hey phaedrus,

They had a ton of different personnel in there. Ran 1st, 2nd, and 3rd units. You have to figure the OL were in the same mindset as the DL/LBs, so, LaFleur really got his message home on protecting each other from injury. So freaking smart. Plus, they really gave a ton of reps to 2 and 3 units on OL.

But, yeah, given that, you could clearly say the refs should have blown the whistle stopping a play dead any number of times, and LaFleur alluded to that in his presser afterwards. And, I wasn't joking on those numbers, but, it was what it was... Often times there were 2 or 3 guys collapsing in on the QB at the same time. We should see a pretty good pass rush for our D as we progress with PreSeason games, giving us a better idea.

I'm such a geek with this stuff I watch plays over and over to see who is doing what, all that crap. For me, that's fun.

Yeah, and MVS did not have a great night. I don't see J'mon making this team. The Packers have an ass load of talent at WR, just insane competition.

Some difficult cuts ahead, especially at wideout. One conclusion I've reached: Alex Light is probably a better option than Jason Spriggs.

Hey Joe, I do find this interesting. Spriggs did look a lot bigger on the sidelines. I was thinking a couple of weeks ago that maybe I should not be completely discounting him like I had been. If he ever gets healthy enough to make his way onto the field to compete this preseason, maybe he can finally do some of the things we've been hoping for from him. Kinda weird, but that was my thought.

Sometimes it takes at least one year of conditioning and a NFL training table to develop the mass required to be a top OT. Sometimes 2 or 3 years. We've seen it all the time with players Ted would take, they would never pan out in GB, and they go on to perform well, like we had never seen. Giacominni comes to mind. I guess on the D side, Lawrence Guy. Both got rings...

Weird concept, but, we don't want to be the NFL stopover to develop the hogs for 2 or 3 years for others to make use of. And, where does that fine line get drawn?

I don't see EQ in that equation.  Am I missing something here?  Also, there's a fluff piece about Moore being back in the mix.  I'm going to say that's false.

Which also leaves Equanimous on the outside looking in?

Most important thing to me, #12 looks healthy.  For the Packers to go back over the .500 mark, he needs to stay that way or they'll be in huge trouble once again if he goes down.

I was impressed with some of the catches the WRs made, but I'm skeptical that the group is all that talented outside of Adams.  Kumerow seems to be the most intruiging of the backup type guys, he just seems like he's got a chance to make it as a slot WR if he can stay healthy.

Rob (and I) both missed it apparently. I'd put him in the top six with Shepherd at #7 still ahead of Moore. Moore has played better and the piece is largely accurate but the consistency still doesn't appear to be there. He looks to be a prime candidate for the practice squad.
