There was a thread one time that dealt specifically about when to use the quote function. Predictably, before that thread ended, or soon thereafter, it was soon forgotten.

 

When bandwidth usage was a concern, I can see having to throttle unnecessary quotes. Not sure why it is now, but I wish it were done more often when people get into pissing matches. When a post has 4-5-6 quotes in it, they get tough to read.

It is pretty simple, in almost all occasions, you can use the "post reply function" and move through a thread just fine.  When people overuse the quote feature, the board becomes difficult to read.  

 

For example, in a thread about Adrian Peterson, you notice someone made a comment about Adrian Peterson.  To make your own comment about Adrian Peterson, you do not need to quote another persons statement, just make your comment.  Even if that person's comment sparked a thought in your head, just make the comment and move on, we can follow your thinking.

 

If there is one particular piece that was important, just quote that part.  Notice how Keil did so in the post above, he quoted just the salient point and moved on.  

 

Quoting the post above you is almost never necessary, regardless if it happens in 4 minutes, 4 hours or 4 weeks.  People tend to think sequentially, so you responding to the last response is something a reasonable person can keep up with (so, about 2/3s of X4 posters).  

 

I have no problem with using the quote feature, but overusing it when it doesn't help contribute to the dialog or is redundant only clogs up the forum.  If your post drives the same point with the quote or the word  penis, then the quote was unnecessary.  

 I would set the over/under at 5.5 to 6.  That seems about average.
