The final resting place of the man who brought five championships and the first two Super Bowl titles to Green Bay is marked by the simple headstone that bears only the name: LOMBARDI.

Three Packers fans think it is time for a little bit more recognition.

John O'Neill of Middleton; his wife, Mary Beth Johnson; and Tom Presny of Janesville have received the blessing of Vince Lombardi's daughter to start collecting money for a bronze memorial plaque to be placed at the foot of the former Packers coach's gravesite.

"When I tell people about this idea, I usually get this reaction: 'This hasn't been done already?' " said Presny.

Lombardi, who died of cancer in 1970 at 57, is buried at the 60-acre Mount Olivet Cemetery in Middletown Township, N.J. where he shares a headstone with his wife. It had been suggested that he have a much bigger headstone with a Super Bowl theme. But the original headstone was picked out by Lombardi's wife, Marie, and their children, Susan and Vince Jr., didn't want that changed at all, said O'Neill.

But then O'Neill - whom fans may recognize as the fan who dresses up as St. Vince - thought of the idea of a plaque. He suggested it to Susan Lombardi last fall.

"I figured I've got nothing to lose. Just go for it," said O'Neill. "There's so many people that visit that site right now."

Ed Cardoza, who has worked at the cemetery for 27 years and is now the supervisor, said Packers and NFL fans find Lombardi's final resting place despite the less than ostentatious grave marker.

SOUNDS like a great idea
