Not sure we learned that much from last night, but first cut is from 90 to 75 by Tues 8/27 4 PM ET and then to 53 after the last pre-season game by Sat 8/31 at 6 PM ET.

QUARTERBACKS (2)

Keep:  Rodgers, Young

Practice Squad (PS):  Coleman

Cut:  Harrell
Comments:  Seeing the Seahawks play basically an 8-man front, bottling up the running game because of total disrespect for Harrell and the passing game, brought back painful memories of the Redskins doing the same in the '72 playoffs against Brockington and Lane because of Scott Hunter's ineffectiveness.  The parallel between Harrell and Hunter -- smart guys, poor arms, etc. -- is striking.  Young looked excellent both throwing and running.  Imagine what he could do once he really knows the playbook and plays with the first string.

RUNNING BACKS (5)

Keep:  HBs Lacy (D2), Harris, Green, Franklin (D4), FB Kuhn (30)

Cut:  HBs Starks, Peace, FB Amosa

Comments:  Disappointing to read how underwhelming Frankin has been.  If not for his D4 status, would make you think about putting him on the Practice Squad.  Kuhn now seems a lock.  Still tough call on whether to keep Green or Starks, but will give slightest nod to Green based on his unknown upside.

WIDE RECEIVERS (5)

Keep:  Cobb, Nelson, Jones, Boykin, Ross

PS:  Johnson (D7A)

Cut:  Dorsey (D7B), Walker, White, Gillett, Hines

Injured Reserve:  Cunningham

Comments:  Ross may have done enough to make himself the primary returner.  Johnson and Dorsey finally healthy, still think Packers will keep one or both on PS, who have much more potential to develop than Walker or White.

TIGHT ENDS (5)

Keep:  Finley, Quarless, Mulligan, Taylor, Bostick

Cut:  Williams, Stoneburner

Comments:  Coaches are saying Bostick's blocking hasn't developed much, where Williams is adequate.  But Bostick still bigger, runs just as well and Williams' hands haven't shown up as advertised.  Nice to see Quarless finally back.

OFFENSIVE LINE (8)

Keep:  Bakhitari (D4A), Sitton, Dietrich-Smith, Lang, Barclay, Newhouse, Van Roten, Taylor

PUP:  Sherrod, Tretter (4B)

PS:  Datko

Cut:  Gerhart, Lewis, Hughes

IR:  Bulaga

Comments:  Probably makes more sense to allow Barclay start at RT, allowing Newhouse to offer LT insurance behind the rookie Bakhitari.  Guessing Thompson will pick up at least one veteran at final cut-downs to improve upon Van Roten, possibly Taylor as well.  Both don't seem to deserve spots on the 53, would be better suited for PS.  Disappointed Datko has shown so little, may not even make PS.

DEFENSIVE LINE (6)

Keep:  Jones (D1), Raji, Pickett (33), Daniels, Wilson, Jolly (30)

PUP:  Worthy

PS:  Boyd (D5B)

Cut:  Miller, Pena

Comments:  Jolly more than a feel-good story, adds ability, size, toughness.  Both Daniels and Wilson appear to be improved, great to see.  Boyd a tough call for the 53 or PS.  And may have to find a spot for Miller on PS.  Counting Neal now as an OLB.

LINEBACKERS (10)

Keep:  OLBs Matthews, Perry, Neal, Mulumba, Moses, ILBs Hawk, Jones, Francois, Lattimore, Manning

PS:  OLB Palmer (D6), ILB Barrington (7C)

Cut:  OLB Savage, ILB Reed

Comments:  Lots of good players here, others with potential.  Both Palmer and Barrington have shown enough to work on developing further.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9)

Keep:  CBs Williams (30), Shields, Heyward, House, Hyde (D5A), Ss Burnett, McMillian, Jennings, Bush

PUP:  S Richardson

PS:  CBs Nixon, S Banjo

Cut:  CB Smith, Means, Ss Fulton, Powell

Comments:  Can't get over how good Hyde has looked.  Bush very secure.  Just a matter of who makes the PS.  S Banjo may have bumped CB Smith for a slot there.

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Keep:  Crosby, Masthay, Goode

Cut:  Tavecchio

Comments:  Still think there's a more consistent, veteran option that'll be out there after final cut-downs.  Crosby's inconsistency is just too much to live with anymore.

The thing about Banjo besides the name is he appears to be a willing tackler. Made several nice open field tackles last night.  Can't say that about too many Packers defenders.

I'm pretty disappointed with what I have seen thus far of the 2013 Packers. One touchdown in 3 games. O-line still in disarray after how many years of Campen? Pass defense looks improved, thought they controlled Wison & Co pretty good, but can't say the same for rush defense. They were repeatedly gashed last night.

Not sure I agree with the starting OL in disarray. GB has seen three good DL in 3 games and pass protection has looked pretty good.

AR has only played 5 series in 3 games and averaged 9 plays per series and moved the ball pretty effortlessly. They've missed plays that prevented them from finishing drives. Not having Jordy or Cobb doesn't help.

Starting D gave up some plays last night but I'll take holding Seattle starters to 3 points and forcing 2 TO's in the 1st half any time.

Banjo is a hitter but let the receiver run across the field & get outside of him to pick up a first down on third & long. AR has played 5 series & I don't think that any of them have ended with us punting & that is without Cobb & Nelson. Our starting defense played the run very well & held Lynch in check, it was our backup LBers & DB's that they ran on. I like our team & see another double- digit win season.

Well, as a crabby old man, here's my take.  I thought we now had this great plan to use Clay as a spy on mobile qb's like Russell Wilson.  I wasn't impressed last night.  Or were we playing such a vanilla scheme that we didn't use a spy?  I am afraid Colin Kapernickle will carve us up like a thanksgiving turkey.

Anyhoo, as for the roster:

qb--agree

rb--I'd rather have Starks than Green.  I watched Green in college too.  Don't know what they saw in him.  No power at all.  Yes, he's fast, but he needs a huge hole or he stops at the line.

wr's--have never been sold on Ross, and have been iffy on Boykin.  Not sure why Hyde hasn't had more reps as a returner.    I think Walker could be a REALLY good receivers.  He has it all.  Have also been impressed by White and Gillette.  I'm hoping we keep 6, as I'm VERY nervous about the health problems of Jordy and Cobb.

Te's--NO!  Please get rid of quarless and Taylor!  Let's quite wasting time on these guys. Not worth it.  Yes, Stoneburner made a crucial error last night, but he's got a lot more upside, imho.  4 tight ends should be plenty.  Let's keep a 6th WR instead.

OL--OK.  Except Van Roten sure makes me nervous.  Haven't seen or heard much about Garth, but he DOES have NFL experience as a Center.  Might he be better than Van Roten?  I don't know, just asking.  Party on, Garth.

DL--Agreed.  Feeling better about DL now.  Keep in mind that due to weight and size restrictions, Jolly counts as 2 players, just as he would require 2 seats in a commercial airplane.

LB's--Feeling good about our OLB's.   I've been nervous about our ILB's, but they looked somewhat better last night, especially when blitzing, though they didn't help stop the run much.  Francois is coming on.  Perry too.  Haven't seen much from Manning until that great hit on the QB last night.  Can't believe that was a penalty.  BS call.

DB's--They're really developing, barring injuries!!!  Banjo impressed.  Hope they can find a way to keep him.

ST--Please God, NO CROSBY!  I'd rather go with Tavecchio and have Masthay boom kickoffs out of the end zone like he did last night!  If you're worried about leg strength with Tavecchio, think outside the box and let Masthay try it.  Guy has a cannon for a leg.  And yes, I still hope we Norwegian-Americans get a chance to get Kickalicious in the Green and Gold.  It would be most appropriate.  Dude knows something about cold weather kicking, too!

Overall--I'm a little nervous about how little playing time Rodgers has gotten.  So many teams play the first teamers into the 3d quarter in this game, and yet Rodgers played on ly one series.  I hope i'm just worrying over nothing, but will our timing be down for game one against SF?  Rodgers missed Jones last night on a pass that could have been a TD.  Makes me wonder.   But then, I'm a parent.  I always worry.   I really worry about playing the read-option in the first two games, AND against Seattle if we meet them in the playoffs.  If last night's first half was supposed to show how much better we are at defending that, we are in deep doo-doo.

..Seattle's first team offense scored 3 pts. on us in the first half, if that is "deep doo-doo" we will take it every time. If AR played the entire first half do you think we may have scored more than 3 pts.?

I still like Starks and DJ Williams, although they sure haven't shined in the pre-season...I'd keep both.

Jolly looks good at times...but man does he look old and rusty at times..watch  Seattle's third quarter 43 yard TD run....Jolly looks like a practice dummy---one guy absolutely steam rolls him....Jolly had a tough game overall last night..I'm not sure his spot wouldn't be best served by youth.

The QB guru wasted way too much time and energy on him. The team should have moved in another direction long ago.

Makes sense to cut Harrell now, get Vince as many reps as possible from here on out.  Not likely, but wouldn't put it past Jimmy Harbaugh to a pull a dick move like bringing Harrell in for a week just to plumb the well.

I really don't understand why Mike was so crazy about him. Sure, he put up huge numbers at Texas Tech, but college football is overflowing with guys like him. Teams sometimes keep one around because he's exceptionally intelligent or athletic, but Harrell was neither of those things. There didn't seem to be a single thing about him that should have given the coaching staff cause for optimism.

MM makes more right decisions then wrong ones but have to agree, this was a bad investment from the start. Had Harrell shown marked improvement, that'd be one thing. But I just didn't see anything that indicated he was getting better.

And Coleman has regressed.

FINALLY!!

Micahel Rodney (Packer Update) tweeted me yesterday he's been saying for 3 years Harrell is no good. Guess the coaching staff finally agrees.

FYI, as long as he keeps himself clean off the field & studies hard in the classroom, VY gives us a great chance to win should the unthinkable happen.

Also, If any team gives Harrell a chance it'll be Minnesota. Other than that, his NFL career as a player is over.

Wilde mentioned that Harrell was Rodger's BFF on the team and he thought that was a factor in why MM was trying to do what he could to keep AR's best bud on the team. Appears MM now needs to set up a play date with Vinny and AR.

Rodgers BFF before was Ruvell Martin.....& after that Driver & now....??? He can use Clay. That'll be pretty "safe" to last a few years.

This is about what's best for the team & winning football games, not placating a superstar QB. We've been down that road before. Let's not go there again.

Yeah...I kind of figured something like that.    At least with as others have mentioned at least we have a punchers chance with VY>   Of course would be ****ed if we lost Rodgers long term.   But if AROD was knocked out for a couple games I would at least feel we would have a shot with VY.

My two X4 whipping boys on this roster are Missin and not so Golden Graham

It is clear I am in the same boat as Rev Al and Rev Jess....I hate little whiteys

Rodney is a self-promoting ass-clown. He can't got a week without pointing out "as I said last year," and referencing an old blog. He's his own biggest fan.

Why the hate for Gillette?  Yeah, he did catch everything.  I'm surprised by this one.

I disagree.  Have you seen some of the noodle arms and talent-lackers that seems to keep cropping up on rosters year after year.  He'll go onto the scrap heap along with guys like the McClown brothers, Dan Orlovsky, Caleb Hanie, etc.  Sure, some of those guys have played  some actual games, but they're still terrible.  And yet they get tryouts because....I don't even know why.  Desperation maybe, and the ability to learn/read a playbook I guess.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a 'transaction" line down the road for some NFL team with Harrell's name in it.

The view of the rest of the league will likely be that if the QB guru couldn't squeeze anything out of Harrell after three years he's probably not worth the trouble. My guess is his NFL career is over.
