Football an Olympic Sport?

Uhh, memo to "Rog," the IOC dumped softball because it was dominated by the Americans. No way that flag will ever fly. Ironically, the IOC has no problem with the Chinese dominating ping pong.

he's bound and determined to try and make the league international. go ahead and start a eurasia league (the EFL?) just don't ever think about inter-league games. players that are good enough can try and make the move to the NFL to play but I don't EVER want to see games between the two leagues. if the EFL can't stand on its own, there's your answer.

Pissed me off when they dropped softball and leave **** in there like badminton, pingpong, etc. I mean, come on...

While part of me would love to watch Patrick Willis wrap up the entire backfield from Kazakhstan and toss players out until he finds the guy with the ball....

I would be equally terrified some road paver from New Zealand would take pleasure in inflicting harm to Aaron Rodgers.

No way football flies in the olympics. The dominance of the USA would make the dream team in basketball look like a youth program.

I remember a number of years back there was some chatter about how good some of these club teams in Europe and Asia that play American football were. The people that knew about them said that at best, those club teams competed at a college Division III level. That was a number of years ago and perhaps some of those teams are better now, but I doubt it.

Not only would the Americans dominate the sport, it would probably be borderline dangerous to players for any nation that faced them. They literally would not belong on the same field.

I thought that having Trampoline events at the Olympics was a waste of time.

There was a game here in Austin earlier this year - USA vs World for under 19 yo, basically high school. I think the USA won 77 - 7 or something like that.

Anybody else hear about the USFL coming back? I heard some blurb on the radio - I think Marshall Faulk is involved. Starting out with 6 teams I think. No, I don't feel like googling it.

Even if the rest of the world had legit competition, I'm not sure that American football could ever work for the Olympics. You would think a minimum of 16 teams would be required. Given the time frame, there wouldn't be time for a round robin format, so we're talking single elimination. Even then it would be a 4 game tournament. That's 1/4 of the football season!

Then there's the issue of how the Olympic team would be chosen. Would the reigning SB champ represent the USA? That makes about as much sense as anything. Creating an NFL "dream team" wouldn't exactly result in the USA sending it's best product to the Olympics. On the other hand, the idea of NFL forcing it's SB winner to prepare for and participate in 4 additional overseas games every 4th year seems... highly unlikely.

Given that scenario, would any NFL player be participating in the Olympics football tournament? I very seriously doubt it. I doubt even more seriously that NFL owners would be on board. Or the NCAA for that matter. So what's the point of the Olympics adopting the sport if neither the NFL or NCAA will be involved? We're essentially talking about a USA Olympic team comprised of Area League players, and those would the BEST players in the tournament. Who would even care?

We could just send the Pro Bowl squad.

American football hasn't a snowball's chance in hell of gaining Olympic sport status. I'm waiting for them to dump basketball--darn Americans dominate it every Olympiad.

How about a compromise....Let's make Madden an Olympic sport. U.S. would be very good, but the Japanese, Chinese and Trinidad and Tribego would all be good.
