Finley made some noise awhile back about wanting to be Tagged as a WR instead of a TE based on where he lined up

and how often he lined up wide

The discussion didn't get too far as GB made him an offer he couldn't refuse

Now we are seeing it again with Jimmy Graham in New Orleans and Dennis Pitta in Baltimore among others

My question is this: IF they want to be tagged as a WR , then shouldn't they also be paid as a Wide Receiver too ?

The only reason they want that WR designation is because the Tag number is higher and that's fine

What if a team said "OK, we'll pay you as a WR" and your actual production is on par with a mid-range WR.

60 catches for 600 yards and 7 TDs puts you in the James Jones WR category and we'll pay you accordingly, as a 3rd or 4th WR.

OR you can STFU and be paid like one of the top 5 TEs....

Can't have it both ways dickheads

Pretty sure they'd shut their pieholes and take the top TE pay over the average WR pay every time...

I'm with ya completely, Satori.

Next time I have a review I'm gonna tell my boss I want to be evaluated as a CEO because I park in the same parking lot as one, work at the same company and do far more work than the CEO does. And I want a pay raise commensurate with that evaluation.  I'm sure he'll completely understand and do my bidding.

A guy is what he is and that's the way it is.  Why'd he play TE in college if he thought he'd be a WR in the pros?

What a wonderful life, Satori! And I agree with you: tag them based on their production then as a mid-level receiver. Graham's great, but he wouldn't be as great without Brees. Be thankful for what you got rather than chase Benjamins. I'd be more impressed if a WR or TE would accept a bit less $$ and instead tie their contract length to that of their superstar QB. Now that would be impressive!

This will fix itself over time.  5 years ago, the TE was not a high value position.  You had Gates and Gonzalez but other than that, not many consistent difference makers.   That pushed the franchise tag number down when a position only has 2 premier players.  Now if young guys like Gronk, Graham, V Davis, J Thomas, etc. can make TE a high value position, the tag number will go up.

Yes it will

They changed the formula in the last CBA; so it may take a little longer. The formula used to be the average of the current top 5, but now the average is diluted by the average of the top 5 over the last five years. So it takes a little longer to move up to the current contracts. None of them even want the tag, so its strange how much they fight over it. Its all just another negotiation point.
