So playing time is decided by price tag? Why is Newhouse starting over Sherrod?

Hawk has played extremely well.

Disagree, Hawk has not played well in pass coverage, never has.

What are "run downs"?

Maybe I should have said play Francois on passing downs.. 3rd and 10, 2nd and 15... I hope your just playing "dum", but I will answer it anyways.
I like Smith too, but he is more in the mold of the two starters IMO and not as good as either at this point in his career.

I'm not suggesting he replace Hawk entirely, just that we get off the field on passing downs for a guy who's strength appears to be coverage.

I'm sure there was a lot of resistance to inserting Bishop by fans when he was a backup. He was play maker, it seems Francois could be as well.

true, no posts for 2 months. but it has been a great season and not much to complain about. Sorry for making a few observations.

I'm not trying to be a dick guy, but don't even attempt to play the victim card here. You've offered up some ridiculous takes in the past that I'm sure somebody could locate and repost if they have some time to kill.

So when you come back after a hiatus and post your typical negative "observations" of a team that's won 19 ****ing straight games , you should expect to take a few jabs.

The Packers rarely play all 4 linebackers anyway.

1 - Yes, starters lose jobs to injury. This is professional sports, not High School cheer squad. I could name 100 examples, but if you think about it I'm sure you can come up with a few yourself.

2 - I never said he should replace him as the starter. I suggested they have a sub package for him on obvious pasing downs. This is a very common practice in the NFL.

3 - I assume you're under the impression that when the Pack goes to nickle, they remove a LB.. Not true, the remove a DL.

Not enough credit IMO is going Winston Moss' way either. To have 4 ILB's playing well enough that any could start with little to no drop off says quite a bit about his coaching and the understanding these players have of the defense and what they're supposed to do.

Quiet....someone else may hear you and want his services.
Let's stick to the topic.

Regarding Francois, it's too early to fall in love with him. He isn't as physical as either starter, but it sure is nice to have a pretty assignment sure guy in there when guys go down.

Smith is proving to be a find as well. He's a more physical, and despite his smaller, more compact size, he's got a great burst and tackles well from I have seen.

And I like the ability to rest guys and not miss a beat. Depth is a great thing, as this team proves over and over again.

Music, I'm not suggesting Francios take over as the starter for Hawk. Hawk has been solid against the run this season and is probably light years ahead of Francios in that dept. I'm suggesting we have a sub package for defending the pass that puts Frenchie in for Hawk. Much like how we have been using Neal in the 2-4-5.

I too think Smith is the better overall player of the two, but Frenchie has shown he can make a play on a ball and cover some ground in the pass defense. I'm just suggesting we utilize that strength of his in certain situations.

I agree with you. The depth is the key- different looks, guys with different skill sets. They spent a bunch of dough on Chillar because he could move around and defend TEs. Plus they can go "Psycho" with 5 LBs and really mess with teams. If McCarthy can do what he's doing with depth at TE, Capers can do similar things with extra LBs.
McGinn thinks Hawk needs to worry, but he differs from my opinion and thinks Smith can challenge him for the starting job instead of a sub package with Frenchie.]

With A.J. Hawk due to return this week, he'll need to pick it up because Smith looks like a player. Francois, another backup, played well, too. For the second time in three games he stretched out and made a fingertip interception. He also jarred the ball free from Reece to set up Erik Walden's 5-yard TD return. However, Francois was a step slow again in coverage, didn't have a pressure in 10 rushes and missed two tackles.
Here are some comments from Capers in the JSOnline blog

Defensive coordinator Dom Capers hinted that Smith and Francois may have played themselves into meaningful snaps, regardless.

"Well, you want to have as much depth, and there are different roles," Capers said. "We certainly have enough defensive packages and so you could see those guys show up in different defensive packages. I know the experience here will pay off and it'll certainly help us as we move closer to the playoffs."
