Vince made him a star. Perfect timing for the league, handsome poster boy, New York, in the dawn of televised pro ball. Much better player than announcer.
C'mon, Gifford was a very good play-by-play man and the perfect guy to deal with Cosell and Meredith. He did as much as anyone to help make MNF a don't miss event.
I take your point but stand by my view.
@AdamSchefter: Frank Gifford set Giants' franchise record with 78 TDs; NFL MVP in 1956; 8 Pro Bowls; PFHOF
Gifford was a historic player. Liked his announcing too. Imagine having to put up with some of the monkeys he had to work with in the booth. Of course he must have liked it seeing who he married.
When I began watching Monday Night football, it was Howard Cosell, Frank Gifford, and Don Meredith. I personally thought that was a really cool group. Gifford wasn't as interesting as the other two personalities, but I thought his calmness was needed to offset the other guys' quirkiness.
I like the Monday Night guys now, but to me, Gifford, Cosell, and Meredith was something special and quirky and have been unmatched as as a MNF team in my opinion.
Turn out the lights,
The party's over ...
I'll second that fightphoe93 - pure entertainment with that bunch. If only they still let them drink in the booth we might have something again.
Really liked his early work with MNF.
He was a Bakersfield guy who returned regularly and the paper has all sorts of quotes about his classy, humble nature. He was the face of the NFL back in the 50s when the sport gotpopulaR on TV. Grew up very poor and became a huge success.

Gifford is what made the broadcast watchable back then. He had to somehow do that job with Cosell yammering and Meredith probably downing a bottle of jack in 3 hours. I was floored when I heard he had been part of MNF for something like 27 years?
