What we saw last night was a direct result of Pettine's philosophy that when it comes to D you die faster by the pass than by the run.  Granted he has little at ILB to help stop the run but the problem with his theory is that a team that can run successfully on you will have an easier time throwing on you as well.  If nothing else the D needs to find a way to stop a good running game on 1st down.  That's where it all starts.  That's hard to do with a UDFA playing a hybrid DB/LB role but it goes deeper than that.  Playing nickel on 1st down vs DAL is not going to work.

Paws:

  • Rodgers finally looked like Rodgers. For the most part, got the ball out earlier than he has and took what the D was giving. He was the leading runner, but he didn't get really hammered (the ball getting knocked out of his hand the exception) and he slid to save his body. Liked that he used his RB outlet. Much happier this week with his play.
  • Adams being Adams. They couldn't cover him. The turf toe could put a huge dent in the season.
  • King before the injury. Jefferies was targeted nine times but caught three balls. Most of that was King.

Lames:

  • Injuries again. Will there come a year when we don't lament about the vast number of injuries, when we get through a season at least relatively healthy?
  • Running game. MLF has to find a way to open things up whether it's an RPO, draws, sweeps, whatever. The line is not good as good as it needs to be in order to run up the middle or to the right. That said, why not go left? It seems our runs go to the right far more often to follow a poor-blocking TE...
  • The last Packer play was an advertisement for why PI replay should be used -- but it wasn't. I don't know if MVS wanted to reach with his hands, but the picture in the game thread clearly shows PI and no call.

Not a disaster to lose this game, especially to a well-coached team with a good QB and its back against the wall, but for just a couple of things we could be 4-0 today. So close, yet so far.

ARod and a lot of fans have talked about how great Aaron Jones can be.  I’m not seeing it.  He was not a threat last night.

I really expected more out of G-mo and MVS, too.  By the end of the game I was hoping ARod would throw to Shepherd or Lazard.  For cripes sake, someone needs to step up!

I realize ARod and Graham are buddies, but I feel like he has TOO much trust in the guy.  Graham not going for the pylon on the 1-yard pass???  Come on, man!

Part of the problem was there wasn’t a good camera shot of the play.  On what they had, it looked like the defender was holding both his arms so he couldn’t close them on the ball. I watched it like 3 times and it appeared a split second earlier than the ball, but probably not enough to overturn. Maybe with a clear shot but there wasn’t one.

It didn’t matter what the replays showed.  The non call benefitted Philadelphia and that was a consistent theme during the game.  Between the calls and non-calls I swear it was like watching the NBA playoffs with Dick Bavettas crew.

I realize that will come across like a whiner but honestly I don’t care.  The way the league has allowed officials to insert themselves into games really opens the door to these conversations.  Not to mention that the NFL does not want an Eagles team at 1-3 and basically behind the eight ball.   I’m sure the degenerate gamblers were happy.

The game itself is becoming very hard to watch.  Not to mention they obviously do not care about player safety.  If they did that asshole cheap shot artist would have been ejected and fined.

The simplest definition of turf toe is that it is a sprain of the main joint of the big toe. It happens when the toe is forcibly bent up into hyperextension, such as when pushing off into a sprint and having the toe get stuck flat on the ground.

Sprains of the big toe joint became especially prevalent in American football players after artificial turf became more common on playing fields β€” hence the term "turf toe." Artificial turf is a harder surface than grass and does not have much "give" when forces are placed on it.

You basically sprain the tendons/ligaments at the base of the big toe, by hyper-extending the metatarsophalangeal joint. (So soft tissue)

The term "turf toe" refers to an injury of any soft tissue structure in the plantar complex, such as the plantar plate or a collateral ligament.

  • Grade 1. The plantar complex has been stretched causing pin-point tenderness and slight swelling.
  • Grade 2. A partial tearing of the plantar complex causes more widespread tenderness, moderate swelling, and bruising. Movement of the toe is limited and painful.
  • Grade 3. The plantar complex is completely torn causing severe tenderness, severe swelling, and bruising. It is difficult and painful to move the big toe.

Just a quick cut and paste.

I don't know how to do that either, this is just a drag and drop.

WR Davante Adams had his MRI today on his toe injury, and sources say it’s not believed to be serious. The team will be careful with their star pass-catcher. But if he misses time, it may not be much.

Not as bad as I thought it would be after seeing all the Eagle fans outside the stadium but definitely not what any respectable Packer fan would like to see.

Part of the problem is that Lambeau Field is a bucket list destination for football fans. Couple that with a Thursday night game and season ticket holders unloading seats and you get a stadium full of opposing fans.

For the record, all of the Eagle fans in my section were decent folks.

Almost 24 hours later and I’m seeing the bright side.   3-1 is an excellent start for a first year head coach.  Look around the league and even past years at what 1st year coaches have done and we have ample reason to be optimistic.

We don’t look like SB favorites but I don’t think anyone expected that coming in.  We were hoping to just make the dance.   After 4 games, we’re in great position to do that.   Once we’re in, we got something nobody else does.  Arron Fucking Rodgers.

Swantz was behind all the dirty plays from beginning to end. If the refs don’t call it then he is going to keep it up. I think that HE should be fined. It was his players who did it but it was his coaching that taught it. They have become my new team to hate.

P.S. I would love to β€œmeat” this team in the playoffs.

Well, we did lose Jamaal Williams to injury on that helmet to helmet by Barnett. Williams was our power rusher on the short yardage plays. Jones is the speedy guy but our O Line had trouble making holes for him to run through.  Jones did his best running when he ran around the end of the line with a TE sealing the edge for him or when we ran the jet sweep. going straight ahead worked once when he got the TD. I was puzzled by the low amount of plays we used Vitale in. In camp, it seemed, all the talk was how good Vitale looked on the field.

The only time I saw Lazard being thrown to was when he drew the DPI near the end zone. Some of those passes Aaron threw to MVS were high, like the one GMO caught. Lazard may have been able to make that catch due to his height advantage. Maybe Lazard is running bad routes? I don't know but the guy was pretty good at Iowa State. I did not see Tonyan used on the goal line stand. Earlier this season, on goal line plays, Tonyan would score by running over the goal line and turning around quickly to catch the pass from Aaron. There was none of that against Philly.

I do find it interesting that nobody is talking about Mason Crosby.  That dude played a significant role in the loss.  The game started to turn when he had a short kickoff that allowed the huge return.  The very next kickoff went out of bounds to setup great field position.  No matter how shitty Green Bay played last night, they probably win the game is Mason Crosby just kicks two fucking balls out of the end zone.

He definitely turned the momentum around in this game. It really felt like GB was on their way to an easy win and then that shitty KO gave the Eagles a huge boost they needed. I guess at least he made the tackle?

And then to double down with the KO OOB, that's just inexcusable.

Big thumbs down to the "best fans in the NFL" cashing in to sell their tickets to Eagles fans. I'd estimate the crowd was close to 20% Philly fans. The ones near me were assholes, too. They were making enough noise in the 2nd half that the cheerleaders and Packers were trying to tell the crowd to be quiet. Not gonna work when they are not your fans! The only good part of all that was hearing them get all over Michael Irvin on the sideline.

Pretty simple game, really.  Eagles dominated the trenches on both sides of the ball, so they won.  We can argue all day about play calls, penalties, etc. but it's very hard to win when lose the trenches the way the Packers did.

Also, MLF didn't call 4 passes at the goal line.  Third down was a run option that Rodgers checked out of and threw the ball away.  Semantics but if you're going to criticize, may as well be accurate.

Game Balls

ARod I wanted to give him accolades for his rushing, specifically his on-the-fly adjustments that allowed him to pick up additional yards when it looked like the defenders were closing in on him.
Adams
MVS
King
Alexander

Lame Calls

Refs for not being/getting on top of the head shots and PFs. If it were basketball, we would've been in the bonus for much of the 2nd half. Somebody here once advocated for the offending player being forced to sit out as long as the guy with the injury; I fully support that idea. Targeting would be irrelevant in that case.

Refs again for rules interpretations and applying same to reviews. It's perplexing; replays most often show the ref being in perfect position to see/make a call. They then never make that call, or throw a flag and a 5 minute review and/or challenge ensues. It won't be long before every pass play is reviewed or challenged.
And this is demonstrated every week across the league, so it's not a case of whining about any 1 team in particular.

Offense didn't counter-punch very well to the Eagles defensive adjustments. It's crazy to criticize 400+ yards of production, but that doesn't excuse red zone (and other) failures.

Defensive game plan was crap, adjustments were apparently non-existent. If the scheme is to play only 1 true ILB, he better be Lawrence Taylor. I don't wish to disrespect Martinez; he's a good player but he ain't LT or anywhere close.
It was obvious to me Martinez was on fumes by the 4th qtr, but nobody could rotate in? The results couldn't have been any worse than a worn-out Martinez chasing plays and making tackles several yards downfield.

DL.
Smith, Smith, and Gary for taking the night off.

Special teams are once again special ed.

20% opposing fans used to never happen in Lambeau but the last few games I’ve been to it’s becoming ridiculous.  I couldn’t believe how many Minnesota fans were in the stands last year in GB.

Night games seem worse because either people work the following day or they just don’t want to get home late, don’t know.  But a couple of years ago went to a Thursday night Bears game and it was heavily populated with Chicago fans more so than regular Chicago (Sunday) day games I’ve been to at Lambeau.

It’s hard to tell people to show up and cheer (and not sell their tickets) but in the end they are their tickets to sell.  I just don’t get it.  No different than the Cubs invading Miller Park, although, I see a lot more Brewers fans at Wrigley than I used to as well.
