Isn't that rule in place for plays at end of half/end of game. So offensive player can be down, get ball spotted and run another play?

I'd say that rule is in place for players knowingly giving themselves up, which clearly didn't happen. Thinking you are already down when you aren't is not giving yourself up.
As for NYG not being able to suck since the Jags have cornered that market... Maybe NYG can complement them by cornering the market on 'blow'
