After much thinking and digesting what went wrong yesterday and how it just doesn't feel like a "good" win, it's time to give some credit where it's due: to our defense.

Although they gave up a lot of yards, I think J'ville had a good scheme and Gabbert did a nice job carrying it out. Overall, the secondary kept everyone in front of them, the linebackers had an okay game, and the line didn't let anyone gash them on the ground. If Hawk makes that tackle, we would all be singing his praises: really, when was the last time you saw Hawk fly to the ball like he has this year? We discovered Burnett has a bit of Woodson "get to the QB" in him; House can hold his own; Hayward is steady as it goes. If there was one area of concern on D, it was that we were back to not getting pressure on the QB.

I think if MM had played more of a field position game, our D would have been outstanding and would have led to our O having shorter fields to work with. Thinking back to last year, if our O had played like that our D would have given up even more yards, and we most likely would have been holding our breath at the end or lost. Yesterday it was a bit tense, but our D held tight at the end.

All in all, on a day when our O could do very little right, it's easy to overlook that our D saved us.

The Packer defense held the opponent to 15 points. That should be a win in today's NFL.

They also scored a TD if you count the punt block as part of the defense.

The "offensive genius" and his guys (granted minus a couple playmakers) put up 17 points at home against one of the worst defenses in the league.
Something to keep an eye on.

Last week against STL, the D line didn't create one QB pressure in 37 attempts. Same thing happened yesterday (I believe Pickett got credit for one pressure)

Plenty of moves were made to increase the push from the D line. The last two weeks it hasn't happened.

The D line has to get a better push up the middle.
They could always blitz more to create pressure. My favorite is when AJ ( or any other MLB) sprints (I gues it's called 'sprinting')and then slams into the interior O-linemen and the pile doesn't move at all.
We still lack the pocket-collapser in the middle. Raji has rarely been that guy, Pickett is a run-stuffer, and the others have not proven up to the task. If we get someone in the middle who could get any pressure, then I think CMIII and Perry (when healthy) will have many more sacks/pressures. If we find a big guy in the middle, it would also allow someone like Woodson or Burnett a freer run at the QB when they rush. Right now, those safety blitzers are picked off easily because the guys in the middle are easily handled one-on-one.
I agree Chilli

The coverage has been fantastic this year, but they have to get a pass rush going, particularly when they blitz. It seems like whenever they drop 7 or 8 guys in coverage teams have a really tough time getting yards, but when we blitz it often doesn't get there and it leaves gaps in coverage, such is life in a zone blitzing scheme like Capers.

I think a lot of it has to do with the loss of Bishop. He was an outstanding blitz linebacker.

Going off of that, i thought Brad Jones played pretty well yesterday. He had a sack and a forced fumble.
The D did alright yesterday, and probably better than they would have yesterday. BUT the Jags dropped 8 passes, some of them by wide open receivers. D was lucky to an extent that that happened.

How? Elaborate. If you are going to make asnine blather, at least say why you feel so.

Agreed. And we did win, with our 1st and 2nd receiver out and our best blocking RB. GB took care of business. Reading feedback and other commentary today you'd think we lost. Dum. WTF are people thinking?

The kids made a couple of coverage errors here and there, but nothing horrid and nothing that veterans don't make once or twice a game. I was happy with their effort. Plays were made when they needed to be made. We are spoiled and there should be something to be said for that, many teams wish their team could do that with the regulars, much less backups. TBH, I think they are showing great promise for the future.

We won, defense was solid. I don't care who you are playing in the NFL, but to hold an offense to -1 yards to a quarter after they had put up over 200 the first two is an impressive feat. Considering the injuries we had and incurred, it is of great note.

Offense did enough when we needed a score. Special Teams stepped up and made an amazing play with only 10 guys on the field.

It was a win for the Defense, and you are correct Fandame, they deserve credit.

How many starter out right now

Offense: Kuhn, Benson, Jennings, Nelson

Defense: Bishop, Smith (defacto starter), Woodson, Perry, Shields

over 25% of the starters are out....and most are very recent losses. There will be improvement...whether its players getting healthy or just getting more reps. Beat Arizona, however it takes, and then get hot after the bye against the division teams.
The defense was ok, but if we are going to give them pats on the back for somewhat slowing down Blaine Gabbert....

I doubt the Packers' coaches are impressed with that performance as a whole yesterday. It was ugly, but yes they did win.

If they continue to play like they did yesterday against the rest of the NFL, they wont beat many teams. Injuries do have a big hand in this, but there is still plenty of talent on this team to not play lackluster like they did yesterday (as a team). The defense did have a better game than the offense, but that wont get it done versus many teams in this league at all.

Bingo. It reminded me of the Saints game a bit except we were facing Gabbert instead of Brees. If Matthews or a blitzer doesn't get pressure, then there is no pressure. Having Worthy and Neal dinged up won't help matters, but even they weren't getting pressures before that.

There's 9 weeks to improve that before the playoffs. Hopefully the light will go on for 1 or 2 of these guys soon. You don't always have to get sacks, but you've got to get pressures against the better QBs.
They're banged up, but they survived... Just win. Each game represents a different and unique challenge, and this time they needed the D to get it done. Next week they may need something else. Just win...

Don't forget Perry. It's no coincidence that the run defense and pass rush have been considerably worse the last two weeks with Perry out. He may not be making the big plays, but he sets the edge better than Walden.

The offense couldn't really get anything going all game long as there was no running game and Rodgers and the receivers were out-of-sync. Rodgers missed passes he normally makes. The line seemed discombobulated and blocking broke down numerous times. The defense gave up some large chunks of yardage to an offense of scrubs that seemingly keep them in the game even though the defense actually held the score to where the Packers (or any decent team) should win.

The bad team scored first on a FG, with Green Bay in an early hole. Rodgers eeked out two TD drives in both games. Crosby missed a kick in both games. Both the opponent's TDs were scored by guys who weren't regular starters.
The Jags stayed in the game by employing a defensive game plan that dared us to run the ball. They played 6 guys in the box. NFL play callers & QB's are taught that when they see this the defense is susceptible to be run on....so MM & AR kept trying to run the ball...makes sense when every defender in the box should be blocked....however, we could not win one-on-one matchups in the run game & consistently were in 2nd or 3rd and 7 or more yard downs. Even in the drive where Crosby missed the FG, we had 2nd & 1 & threw two incomplete passes, no doubt because MM didn't feel that we could get 1 yard rushing.Seems to me that getting more creative with our run game (bringing in an extra olineman on occasion, using traps, wham blocks, etc.) could only help when right now we can't win one-on-one matchups in the Zone Blocking Scheme. When you are physically out manned, you must make some opportunities through your scheme. We do this in the passing game (although we are seldom "out manned")but not in the running game. The 49ers blocking schemes are a thing of beauty, which would make Lombardi proud.

Isn't that awesome??!?

I have to go back and re-watch the game vs. the Texans to actually feel what a win looks like.

Defense:

1st in sacks
12th in points against
13th in yards against

I would've taken that at the beginning of the season.

Offense is 10th in points and we're 10th in turnover differential as a team.

We again aren't running the ball efficiently, but we've shown in the past that can be overcome.

The two biggest statistical differences I can see from the last couple of years and this one is that the offense is only 21st in yards. We're usually a lot better than that.

The other issue is the reduction in takeaways from the defense. I'll still take the way this year's group is playing (despite the injuries) over last year's.

Yes.. The Jags avg 15 points a game.. The D gave up 15 even while being put in a tough situation by a bad offensive performance.

In other words, they performed better than most teams have against them this year.

No style points.

Or pass rush.

This season is doomed.

Bring on the draft.

Would people be so negative if the record said 6-2 right now? I don't think so.. I bet the majority of people would be excited that our D has improved from last season and would be talking about the possibility of getting hot in the 2nd half.
A win is a win. Regardless of what it looks like.

Mentioning the d-line has one QB pressure in 86 pass attempts over the last two games doesn't mean your negative and ready to fold up the tent on the season.

Sometimes it just means the d-line has one pressure in the last 86 pass attempts and you'd like to see them force the QB to get rid of the ball before he wants to.
