From Schefter's 10 spot today.

Newhouse no longer unanimous:
Outside of Green Bay, few people know about Marshall Newhouse. But he now might have one of the most important jobs in the NFL. With Packers left tackle Chad Clifton out indefinitely with a significant hamstring injury, the Packers are expected to start Newhouse at left tackle, meaning he will be in charge of protecting the blind side of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Newhouse fared remarkably well last Sunday night in Atlanta when pressed into service, and now he will have more time to prepare for the Rams in Week 6. Newhouse, Green Bay's fifth-round pick in 2010, is familiar with big responsibilities. At TCU, his job was to protect the blind side of Andy Dalton.

And Newhouse (6-foot-4, 319-pounds) certainly has the genes to do it. His father, John, was a running back at the University of Houston when the school went to the Cotton Bowl in 1977, 1979 and 1980. And Newhouse's cousin, Robert, spent 12 seasons playing fullback for the Dallas Cowboys and still ranks fifth on the franchise's all-time rushing list. Now the younger Newhouse gets the chance to distinguish himself in a different way.
I remember reading a lot of good things about Newhouse when he was drafted, mainly that he was one of those hidden gems that slipped in the draft for no real reason. Now we didn't see anything from him last year, but seems like he's really picked up the offense. He'll have this week to get his feet wet against a pretty poor defense, but the following week is his real test: going against Jared Allen in the Metrodome. No matter how well he does this week, i expect him to get plenty of help against Allen, especially with Bulaga back.

I'm starting to think that Campen might actually be a good coach, now that he has some talent to work with. We judged him for not turning Costen, Barbre and Breno into NFL players but maybe they just sucked. But Bulaga, Sitton, Lang, Newhouse and Sherrod all have made significant progress under Campen and look to be NFL starters and some possible pro bowlers.
Don't know if Campen has had a positive affect on those guys, but Philbin has taken a more active role with the OL this year and I'm thinking that has had a factor in their development. Joe Philbin has long resume with OL experience.

From his Packers.com bio:

Philbin originally joined the Packers on Feb. 10, 2003, as assistant offensive line coach, then spent 2004 and ’05 as tight ends/assistant offensive line coach, and was promoted to offensive line coach on Jan. 17, 2006 - before moving to his current position.

Offensive line coach at Iowa (1999-2002)

Offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Harvard (1997-98)

Offensive coordinator/offensive line coach at Northeastern University (1995-96)

Offensive line coach at Ohio University (1994)
I remember his cousin Robert well and he was a pretty good player. Should be an interesting competition between Newhouse and Sherrod next year and I wouldn't be at all surprised if Newhouse is the long-term answer at LT.
If Newhouse is the long-term left tackle, do we move Sherrod to right and Bulaga inside? Or do we trade Sherrod? I think Newhouse and Sherrod are both "too long" for the interior, but Bulaga may fit at guard. I can't see them letting Sherrod sit for too long, given his draft position.

I think MM has said about ten dozen times, we will play the five best OL. Sherrod will be one of those five by the end of the year, as will Bulaga AND Newhouse. Lang is the one on the bubble for next year.
It's way too early to anoint either Newhouse or Sherrod, but if both prove to be the real deal, I think Newhouse would make the most sense at left guard. His body type fits the position. Plus we know that Sherrod isn't a guard and Bulaga is on the verge of becoming a Pro Bowl caliber right tackle.
I think Newhouse tried to play guard his rookie and was terrible. He's a natural tackle. Same with Sherrod. Only Bulaga showed any aptitude for guard, but even he couldn't beat out Colledge last year.

Unless there's a significant deterioration in his play Lang appears to be on his way to becoming a fixture on the line. I see the most probable scenario as either Sherrod or Newhouse replaces Clifton and the other one backs up both tackle positions.
Yeah I don't get where Lang gets pushed out at all. Sherrod was drafted in the same vein as Brian Brohm. TT always drafts back-ups in case of back-ups for the critical positions.

Clifton=Favre
Arod=Newhouse
Flynn=Sherrod

Having a quality back-up in Sherrod for a few seasons is no big deal in the scheme of things. And the fact Sherrod can back up LT and RT is a bonus.

Bulaga, Newhouse, and Lang are not going anywhere.
