"He's looking big," Packers tight end Jermichael Finley said in reference to backup quarterback Graham Harrell (above). "That ball has some juice on it now."

For four weeks, Graham Harrell wasn't allowed to touch a football. His trainer wouldn't let him.

To the backdrop of "Renegade" by Styx or "Sail" by AWOLNATION, the Green Bay Packers quarterback was at the row machine, hurling a medicine ball or whipping through a footwork drill.

"He was relentless," trainer Bobby Stroupe said. "When that ball hits the wall, he wants it to be the loudest. When he's doing rows, Graham is the strongest guy we have. He got up to six plates. This guy is competitive."

Eighteen weeks and 14 added pounds later, Stroupe hopes he's sending the Packers a new quarterback.

SNIP-

This former "system quarterback" who broke a scroll of records in Texas Tech's BB-gun offense has a chance to be Aaron Rodgers' backup. Harrell hopes his grueling off-season in Tyler, Texas, pays off.

He says his arm is much stronger. He's driving the ball with more power.

"Absolutely," Harrell said. "With all the shoulder stuff, I definitely saw improvement in my velocity. And the flexibility, that's huge for me. Every morning, I'd get up there and we'd get after it."

At Accelerate Performance Enhancement Center (APEC), Stroupe has trained both NFL and major-league baseball players - particularly pitchers. Stroupe has worked with Philip Humber of the Chicago White Sox who threw a perfect game in April. The true results won't be revealed for a while. Game situations.

But already, teammates are kidding with Harrell. One told him he treated this off-season like the video-game, Madden, adding to his "arm strength" attribute.

Nothing happened overnight. Stroupe says the quarterback never endured a training program like this. He was a gamer, not a lifter. When Stroupe first tested Harrell, he was surprised at just how inflexible he was. Harrell was stiff in all joints that require rotation. His hips, groin, ankles, elbows, everything.

Quite a bit more after the click.

Sounds like Harrell busted his butt in the off season.

Making Harrell the anti...Harrell. Great read. Even if it doesn't translate to the field, nice to see that commitment.
You could really tell last offseason that Harrell's biggest problem was his arm strength. His accuracy on the short and intermediate passes was fine, but when he had to go long you could tell he was just hurling it without any accuracy. I think if that attribute has improved then he could do well, he's certainly intelligent enough it seems. I have faith in McCarthy's ability to spot a talented QB and coach him up to the player he's capable of being.

No question. If he's vastly improved in that area, I'm looking forward to see what he can accomplish in August.

Harrell knew he needed to improve especially with the drafting of BJ Coleman

Do we have a new Mr. August?
I'm guessing he knew (back in Jan) that he needed to improve if he wanted to take over the #2 spot with Flynn likely leaving in FA, regardless of whatever QB they drafted. Good to hear though...
Encouraging. I remember last preseason and in my eyes Harrell was outplaying Flynn. Could be Harrell faced a lower lever of competition but he moved the chains and got scoring chances. Looks like he is ready to step up.

He would have to really falter for GB to bring in one of available vet QBs:
Luke McCown Bucs/Jags 30
AJ Feeley Iggles/Rams 35
Don McNabb ex ex ex, now less fat 36
Harrell also wasn't getting in the games until both teams had their scrubs in. As I recall, GB subbed in earlier than their opponents so Flynn was playing with most of our scrubs vs. a mix of starters and scrubs. Harrell had a little more even level of competition.
