1) Not going to play AR much, until the playoffs.
2) Want to see what Harrell has in order to make a decision on Flynn?
3) We are going to blow everyone out so much that our back up will be starting games in the second half?

A guy on the p-squad can be snagged anytime, correct? Maybe they are protecting him?
If I'm Miami, Washington, Kansas City or Seattle I'm looking pretty heavily at any young QB with a pulse to see if maybe I can save a draft pick, especially if I don't think I'll have a shot at Barkley or Luck.

The Buffalo Bills forced the Packers’ hand on quarterback Graham Harrell this week.

The Bills offered Harrell a spot on their 53-man roster, so the Packers had to decide whether to promote him from their practice squad or let him go.
Quarless went on IR.

If you have SB hopes and there are still 7 games to go to reach that point, holding onto your #3 QB is a pretty prudent move anyway.

It avoids the obvious Brett Favre question should both AR and Flynn get hurt during the next 8 weeks.
Here is a link to the packers.com transactions page

( you can choose any year) just don't chose to read anything from pablodouche

http://www.packers.com/team/transactions.html

if you look at 2010, you'll note that Harrell was signed to the active roster last December too, on the 18th

Teams start signing guys to futures contracts this time of the year and there is lots of activity in December

From FS' quote yep looks like GB really had no choice. If Buffalo grabs him and Flynn walks via FA, Packers would have no one behind Rodgers going into 2012 who knows their system.

Speaking of, I assume TT will grab a QB in the 2012 draft. If he does, it'll be interesting to see who he likes.
Some more details.

"The Bills offered Harrell a spot on their 53-man roster, so the Packers had to decide whether to promote him from their practice squad or let him go. In a sign that they view him as a possible No. 2 quarterback next year after Matt Flynn’s presumed departure in free agency, the Packers offered Harrell a spot on their 53, and he chose to stay with them rather than go to Buffalo.

“It just shows that they want to keep you around, that’s nice,” Harrell said. “It’s a good thing to be wanted. Yesterday was kind of stressful day trying to decide what’s the best situation. But it’s a good thing to be wanted, and I’ve always really enjoyed it here and am happy to still be here.”

The Packers paid Harrell a lot more than usual to stay on the practice squad. I remember reading the article about that and thought it was over $200,000. So I think that they like him. He is the new #2 QB after flynn leaves via FA.

I do agree that TT will draft a QB.
My sources are telling me that both Matt Flynn and Jermichael Finley will be traded in a 3-way deal where the Packers will recieve both Joe Thomas and the rights to Andrew Luck. The Browns and the Colts will also swap 5th round picks in the 2014 draft. My sourcesa also said that both roster moves (IR-ing Quarless and signing Harrell) were made in anticipiation of the move which is expected to be completed on Thursday. Stay tuned.
I would, too.

but, I'm hoping they get Finley done first BEFORE the Free Agency period, then franchise Flynn and trade him...to get some value...

I mean, come on, what did Philly get for that POS Kolb? really?

TT would be the butt of jokes at the GM meetings IF he doesn't get the same for Flynn.
Harrell's call? Stay put

quote:

On Tuesday, as the Packers mulled what to do with him, Harrell went back and forth in his mind. He also went back and forth with Rodgers via SMS.

“He told me I should stay,” Harrell said Wednesday after he was officially promoted to the 53-man roster, taking the spot of tight end Andrew Quarless, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve. (Harrell said the decision was made Tuesday night.)

“Maybe that was (for) a selfish reason because he and I get along so well and he’s pretty comfortable right now. (But) I trust him and he wouldn’t advise me in the wrong direction.

“I’m excited to be here. Having him definitely helps, not only because we get along so well but he’s such a great player and he can do everything he can to teach you. It’s a great place to learn and develop.

Kolb was a 2nd round pick. Flynn was a 7th. Getting a 3rd or 4th (FA comp pick) for a 7th, regardless of what fans think the player is worth, is a great move.

Yah, right. Roll Eyes After what has accomplished the last 5 years he could give Flynn to some team and he would still not be the butt of anyone's joke.

I know the Packers didn't want Harrell to get away and all but couldn't they use Cobb as an emergency back-up? He has proven to me that he can chunk the ball pretty good.

Now watch 'em go ater Gurley just for spite!

There are some good points already made about post already but I will also add:

1. Flynn has essentially two NFL games under his belt, one bad one good. And both were within a very QB-friendly system. I think Packer fans value Flynn much more than other GMs.

2. The trades for Kolb and even Charlie Whitehurst may scare teams off. As of now, both the Cards and Hags got robbed on those deals (that could change however).

It's been discussed for two years now that a third or a fourth for Flynn would be a nice "get" for the Pack. I will freely admit that I have no idea what kind of a comp pick they would get for a 7th rounder but if it actually is a third or a fourth, I'd be cool with that.

Right! Trade Finley after losing Quarless.

Why do you think the other 37 TEs are on the roster?

To replace the water boy after they cut him to make room for Gurley.
well...I really should've had the sarcasm thingy-dingy going....obviously he wouldn't be the butt of jokes...but I don't think you take into account where someone was drafted as much as the training/coaching you get to improve...agreed that Flynn needs another pre-season and off-season with MM...that's why I'd like to keep him for one more season as insurance...

That is true but Holmgren had such a familiarity with him that he knew for sure what he was getting in his mind.

It is a good point however. We shall see...
