"At this point, Woodson probably matches up better on a tight end than a wide receiver. Plus, when he was on the edge, he was taking on lead blockers, and other guys were making the tackle. He had a heck of a game."

he totally stymied a sweep early in the game by making at least two blockers account for him.

"Against the Bears, Woodson was playing the role that Brandon Chillar played early in the year, and playing it better."

If they blitz Shields on Big Ben, Sam better know what he's doing when he gets back there. Tackle the right arm of Ben. Seriously. Dude is an Apartment building back there.
Gotta give Shields a lot of credit for picking up the defense as fast as he has. It's probably one of the more complex defenses in the NFL and not only picked up the defense in one offseason, but learned a lot about playing CB having only played it 1 year. I think he's as physically gifted an athlete as Woodson was coming out, but obviously isn't/wasn't as complete a football player. Sounds like Woodson helped him out a lot which only helps to cement him (Woodson) as one of the greatest players in Packer history...he's not only making plays for this team, he's helping younger guys and setting this team up nicely for the future.

that is the only reason I wanted to play the jets in the SB. Taking down ben ain't so easy...
So the Vikings trade out of the first round, passing on Jahvid Best in the process, and draft Chris Cook who sucked and then move back up in the draft to get Toby Gerhart who really sucked. Meanwhile, TT drafts Starks in the 6th round and gets Shields for nothing. Thanks TT

And he's a rook? Wow.

I was at a bar watching the game...so I watched the replay of the game last night. I had no idea they even were commenting that it wasn't an INT by Shields. Even on the replay I don't know WTF Parreira was talking about that it should have been incomplete. It was a great play.

I don't think this will be an issue for Shields as if you watch the play in slow motion Shields hits Cutler, the reaches with his right arm and places his hand firmly on the nose of the football and then proceeds to peel it out, it was a beauty to watch in slo-mo!
I know there has been talk of Woody eventually moving to safety to prolong his career, but I think this new role that's been custom made for him will serve the same purpose. If he doesn't have to go step for step with the DeSean Jackson's of the world, I think Woody can effectively play this roving CB-S-LB hybrid for a few more years.

Great point! The more years you can keep Woody on the field in an effective role the better. His skill set is rivaled by only Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu amongst current players and his value to the team goes way beyond what he brings each Sunday. Draft another cover cover, get Burnett back, keep coaches Perry and Whitt, and this secondary will be set for quite some time.

The Packers coaches have taught all these defensive players to tackle the football. Because according to the coaches that's what ultimately matters.

Watch Sam Shields do it here.

In that replay you can see where he's wrapping up is right on the ball. Apparently GB works on this again and again and again. Some may think Sam was trying to strip Cutler but that was simply a positive "side effect" of what he's been taught. You tackle the football.

Pretty cool....
Very fun watching Shields play. He doesn't have prototypical size but he more than makes up for it with speed. And his ball awareness is unbelievable for a rookie, even more so that he's in his second year as a CB. His ball awareness is the differene between a guy like Shields and Ahmad Carroll. Shields always turns his head to the ball. Carroll would just grab the receiver.

Bishop should get some credit for that sack. He had an inside shot at Cutler but took the blocker outside knowing Shields was coming on the inside.

Looked like some nice defensive teamwork right there.
