Anyone else loving GB's variation of the Pistol offense? It's not just GB doing it obviously, but I thought the adjustment to running our offense out of the Pistol helped the passing and running game tremendously. Lacy seems to work better from the I-form (vs. shotgun), but Rodgers needed to be in shotgun to help his calf...best of both worlds. Really though I think they would have run more stuff out of the Pistol even if Rodgers was 100%, I think this is something they have saved for the playoffs. Or maybe I just didn't notice it during the season? If they did use it during the season then they didn't use it often.

I think back to training camp when the offense was doing team drills in the Hutson Center before practice vs. a scout team D and no one ever really said what they were working on. I also thought back to right before the 2013 season when Chris Ault, inventor of the Pistol Offense, was fired by Nevada. I remember it being reported that GB was one of the teams pursuing Ault as a consultant, but ultimately he ended up at KC. Maybe this is a curve ball that McCarthy has wanted to throw in there for a while? He's always maintained that he wants his offense to be "multiple" and he seems unafraid to embrace new formations or ideas bouncing around the NFL.

Just throwing out some discussion, but is this something that might become more frequent in the GB offense is it truly something they just went to because of Rodgers injury? Personally I hope it's something we see more of because I think the Pistol formation really works with this offense.

I think the only amazing thing about what Belichick did is that it was a simple maneuver that completely baffled not only players, but also coaches. McCarthy threw a curve ball we have not (or maybe rarely) seen in a huge game that allowed his star QB to run the offense with a torn calf while simultaneously allowing his RBs to average almost 5 ypc against a D consistently stacking the box to stop the run.

AR has used the pistol quite a bit recently.

Question on Billy B using the old 4 OL'men 6 wide formation.

As I understand it, when a player like Vereen announces himself as ineligible as he did Saturday. He has to remain ineligible as long as he stays in the game and you have to continue to report yourself as ineligible. You can't change on the fly.

The question is, did Vereen leave the field after they blew Harbaugh's mind or did he stay on the field? If he stayed in and didn't report himself as ineligible would be a penalty.

Packers sent the defense to explor the pistol offense in 2013 after getting torched by the 49ers...to learn how to stop it.  http://kcmsports.com/index/?p=10728

As a alum of a college that ran the true pistol for one season, this variation isn't really a pistol offense, because in true form that is a read option type offense.

From what I have read, they only went to this version to protect Rodgers' calf.  It allows the backs to be behind him to run with power on a handoff, like they would if Rodgers took a snap under center and turned to hand it off.  In a shotgun, the backs are even with Rodgers and don't get that power start at the handoff mesh point.

But, Ault did say in an interview he thought Rodgers could run the pistol offense.
