Hope they got him down to somewhere between 3-4 million, but it's probably more than that. God knows what Mike and TT see in that guy.
I can't stand Hawk. I can't. And while I wouldn't swap TT for any GM in football, I'll never understand the admiration for Hawk.

There's still hope I guess. Maybe TT takes an ILB that's expected to be a day 1 starter in the first or second round. Hawk would still be an OK bench/rotation/situation/insurance guy so long as his price tag is under $4 million or so.

AJ might not have lived up to the lofty expectations that we had based on where he was drafted, but I've always liked him. He might not be the fastest interior linebacker on the field, but he's solid, and by cutting his salary, he stays with the team that drafted him, and allows us to keep some depth at the position.
You guys can comment about his play all you want. I choose to look at it another way. The man has twice taken less money to stay in Green Bay. There's something to be said for loyalty. I'm proud to have this man on our team.

I'm with you though. Not happy with Hawks play at all. I think he can be OK with a decent Dline & Bishop. However, as a 5th overall draft pick he sucks.

After going back and looking at the numbers again, heyward, looks like my initial statement was wrong. When he signed his new deal in 2011, it was for slightly less money than his first contract, but on an annual basis, he actually earned more. I didn't figure in the $8 million signing bonus. Whoops.
His initial 6 year deal signed after the draft in 2006 was for $37.5 million. He was set to earn $10.5 million guaranteed on the first day of the 2011 season, all of which would have counted against the cap. The Pack cut him, and resigned him 24 hours later. His 2011 cap footprint was reduced to $4.55 million for 2011.
The new deal in 2011 would have paid him $33.75 million over 5 years including that guaranteed $8 million signing bonus. But the salary and cap footprint were back loaded. He earned $4.95 million in 2012, and was set to earn $5.45 million in 2013, $5.95 million in 2014, and $6.45 million in 2015. His cap impact for 2012 was $6.55 million, in 2013 it would have been $7.05 million, in 2014 it would have been $7.55 million, and in 2015 it would have been $8.05.
So, the total of his new contract in 2011 was $3.75 million less than the first contract, but on an annual basis, his yearly pay increased from an average of $6.25 million to $6.75 million. Now that he's reworked his existing contract, he'll be taking substantially less money to stay in Green Bay. How much less we don't yet know. But I really like that A.J. Hawk has wanted to stay in Green Bay, and has done whatever was needed to do so. He's helped the team, and shown a lot of loyalty. That goes very far with me as a Packer fan. He's in the same category as Donald Driver.

I have to assume that all coaches involved with Hawk see things I don't (or can't), but my eyes see something entirely different.
If I remove any outside variables (good guy, vet prescence, team-first player, availability; whatever), I see a LB that is way too slow to cover anybody, makes tackles 5-7 yards past the LOS, and rarely delivers a thump.

Agreed. But he's always on the field, and didn't he call signals last year? Without Collins and Woodson, Hawk is now the guy who has to make calls for another year until someone else steps up. That I think that is part of his value, as well as his ability to stay healthy. (Okay, it's easier to stay healthy when you are too slow to pull a hammy, too far away from the LOS to get caught up in that mess, and can't deliver a whopper hit.

When posters criticize our Dline for not making impact plays, I often see the excuse that it's their job to occupy the offensive line so the linebackers can do their thing. Well, Hawk certainly has the tackle numbers, but when they're 7-8 yards downfield I see no "impact". He may be Packer people, but he is just a guy.

Even tho they play different positions I look at this way; Hawk for whatever he gets paid or Walden at $4 million per year. I'll take A.J. every time.

I think the biggest issue most fans have with Hawk (those who are critical) is that he was a #5 pick, the highest pick in the draft GB has had in over 20 years. And I think most people would want something more than a "steady, solid player".
I don't dislike Hawk, but as a Top 5 pick, he could certainly be considered a bust.

Given that the going rate for Walden was 4 million, 5.2 million is still on the high end, but not outrageous. Of course, if you think Walden's contract was outrageous that changes the conversation.

Those numbers seem fair. Probably saved his job.
Not sure I can ever remember a starting LB under the age of 30 agreeing to have his current pay cut a little over $7 million. Not a restructure... just agreeing to lop off $7 million dollars.

Good job that both sides got that done, I would bet that he would be close to getting that same $$$ if he was an UFA. He's a good dude, class guy and good teammate.
As everyone else has said, if he was drafted in the second half of Rd 1 or later, everyone would thing the guy is great. He was drafted high, and it "sucks" that we got a steady, accountable, available, player for 8-10 years, for such a high draft pick.
