I did not watch much of the Badgers basketball this season.  And I did not recognize the team last night.  But what I saw last night did look at all like teams we have witnessed over the past two decades.  The crowd noise involved stunk.  Uninspired execution, lack of discipline, no confidence, sloppy and no drive to finish.  There is a problem with this team such as no accountability and I think Greg Gard seems to have accepted mediocrity and lack of poise from some of his toughest performers.   ie., free throw shooting percentage was embarrassing.

Vito has brought nothing to the table since he hurt his knee, yet Alex I, Charlie T and Andy VV can't steal a minute from this guy?

I don't see Iverson growing as a player.  He's clearly an athlete, would like to see him grow as a player.

How does a senior driven team piss away 3 possessions in the closing seconds to lose this game?  Two horrible turnovers under pressure and Hayes leaps head and shoulders over everyone else, but mistimes his jump so bad he can't make the rebound that might have sealed the game.

I watch a lot of basketball at all levels except NBA. And I will maintain until the day I die that the best way to beat a press after a made basket is to inbound the ball as quick as possible and get it to half court before the defense has a chance to set up the press. Whoever is closest, just do it quickly before the defense is n position. This can be practiced.

It drives me crazy when teams waste time waiting for the correct guy to go and be the inbounder. And then stand there with the ball, waiting to inbound until everybody is in the correct spot, letting the press get set up and then have trouble getting the ball to half court.

When you have more turnovers than assists that is a problem.  When you shoot 35% from the FT line that's atrocious.  I won't even go into the 3pt shooting.

Other than rebounding this team is an absolute mess and has been for some time now.   Their flaws are finally costing them games and they are circling the drain.

Unless something changes in the next week or so this is not a tournament team even if their early season record would suggest differently

I would guess that if no improvement is shown over the next 2 weeks Barry will be working the room and phone at the tournament.

They may lose the next three games and end up losing 8 of their last 9, but I think Gard is probably safe after this year. Next year could be it for Gard though. Given the lack of development we've seen from the young players (not to mention the regression of the veterans), they might be hard pressed to win 5 games in the Big 10.

I like Gard and he's paid his dues, but if they tank next year they may have to pull the plug. In the long run, it might be easier to get Tony Bennett to come home to replace Gard after a down season or two than it would have been to get him to follow up Bo Ryan.

I think the free throw problems are spilling over into other areas of the game. After they went up 9, how many times did Hayes or Happ post up and try to get to the rim? Happ's missed FTs were off a rebound foul. Those guys don't want the ball anymore because they have been horrendous at the line. It affects the way they break the press.

The other thing that was disappointing was that they quit like dogs last night at the end of the game. Koenig's shot missed with 3-4 seconds left and no Badger went after the ball.  They literally stood there.  Even if they go hard and foul, there are still 2 seconds left with a timeout in their pocket if a FT is missed to set up a shot.

Amen to this!  I have 4 daughters and have coached a lot of youth basketball and that's the first thing I tell them about breaking a press.  Whoever is closest get the ball in and go.

I don't know why teams don't press the Badgers more. Other than foul trouble, the only reason not to press is that you don't want to give up a layup or a wide open 3 at the other end. Even with Bo Ryan, if the Badgers broke the press they just reset in the frontcourt and work the shot clock down.

Why not make them make a couple of extra contested (even a soft press) passes if there is zero risk involved? Hayes is a liability in a press situation (as he showed last year against Notre Dame in the tournament). Happ is to the point where you can't even play him in a close game down the stretch because even a double bonus is a turnover equivalent. Does anyone trust Vitto Brown handling the ball at all? That leaves Koenig and Showalter. Koenig is very good in that situation. Showalter is adequate. A press forces at least one of the other guys to make some quick decisions. Any defensive strategy that forces Hayes, Happ, or Brown to handle the ball anywhere outside the paint is a win for the other team. I'd bet we'll see more pressing.

It's fair to wonder that the way this team is playing.  I worried about it 2 months ago when Hayes kept annointing himself the star every time he talked to the press. I'm not even on the team and it bothered me.

Who knows really, but they just don't look in sync with each other any more. How does that happen as the season goes on? A rift in there somewhere seems like one of the only things it could be.

At this point in the season they are supposed to know each other's every move. Instead they are throwing it out of bounds or to the other team and just kind of staring at each other afterwards.  That's bad chemistry, and it sucks to see it.

I wonder if there's a chemistry problem with this team?   It just doesn't seem like they are playing for each other.

This is far more likely than anything else... there is certainly something wrong with this team and it's more than on the court.

I think it's Hayes. He called on the spotlight but it has become hotter than he realized. It's easy to be the goofy clown when you have 2 lottery picks dominating the press. And taking social stands is also easy before the season starts. But when it's basketball time you have to clear it all out and play with an edge- and the inability to do that is what we're seeing happen to Nigel Hayes. The pressure he put on himself has overwhelmed him, and he deterioration is the evidence of this.

Happ is a young player also wilting under the pressure, but this is just about basketball. He's simply trying to do too much.

Koenig' struggles were the injury. He's getting his mojo back now.

The lack of development of Iverson is on the coaches. This kid has special ability- but he's terrified to make mistakes. That's coaching. Pritzl same thing- too worried about mistakes to just play his game. That's how things you're good at suddenly leave you.

And I fear that is what has happened with Van Vliet. They need what he can do- but he's being held back from the lineup because he's "not ready". All we can hope for is that he makes a Kaminsky-like emergence and explodes next year. Him and Trice stand to be guys that can really jump next year.

Koenig has been consistently good this year.  I would agree the injury set him back somewhat but he's been decent.

Happ and Hayes statistically have been OK but the FT shooting this year has dropped like a rock.  Happ and Hayes are off from last year by a lot.   Happ is less than 50% and Hayes is hovering around 60%.  With as much as they get to the line it's costing them 10-12 points a game.  Now it's just costing them games.

Each year under Ryan they would have a younger guy or two step in and contribute.  Not so much with Gard.  The bench flat out sucks and it's put way too much pressure on the Big 3.

Not sure I can remember a team tank this badly at the end of a season.  I'd be shocked at this point if they win another game this season.  Simply mind boggling and one hell of an implosion.

Trice has played well for a youngster....BK has been good too.  How about starting Trice, letting him bring it up and run the show,  Run BK off screens and try to get him some more good looks.  Bring Showy off the bench, let him mix it up against the second string of the opponent.

I know nothing about Van Vleit but what have they to lose....let's see what he's got.

WHat happened to Moesch....he had some good minutes last year,  how could he give less than Vitto?
