I am going to my first Packer game on the left coast. Our plan is to stay in downtown San Francisco, and I am looking for any ideas for pre-game festivities as well as any thoughts on how best to get from the hotel to the stadium (shuttle buses, taxi, just rent a car?). Many thanks for everyones' thoughts. Go Pack Go!

Downtown SF is hell and gone from Candleschlock. Public transit ain't great either...and staying near the park sort of sucks. But, your best option is probably public transportation...if you are in downtown SF, BART or Cal Train will get you close enough to use the bus or cab.

You also might try downloading the App for your smart phone called Uber...it's a great on-demand car service that has 3 levels of car service...the cheapest is on par with cabs. https://www.uber.com/
Also, mind your P's and Q's...49er fan base has morphed from a wine and cheese crowd into more of a Raider fan experience.
What PackFoo said about the fans can't be emphasized enough. I had a hellish experience with their POS fans in the playoffs last year. I won't be going to the game this year because of it.
I have only been to NFL games in Green Bay, San Diego, Oakland(and LA Coliseum) and SF...my experiences in the CA stadiums were enough to make me write off ever going to see pro games in this state again.
Raider fans, Niner fans, Charger fans...sure, there are some decent ones, but they've been hijacked by the tatted-up gangbangers and thugs out to get drunk and cause mayhem. And I might add, I've never seen a Packer game in California...when I went to the pro games, it was as a neutral observer or with friends who were fans of the home team and it was sketchy.
I had good experiences in San Diego and San Francisco - maybe I was lucky. I am not a big city guy, but San Francisco is a unique town - lots to see. The people however are somewhat rude. Pre-game stuff: yeah, I agree with the others, there's noting at or near Candlestick. If you have enough time, go walk the Golden Gate bridge, and then Muir Woods (Redwoods), visit the Fisherman's wharf, and take a ferry ride or two across the bay.
Personally, I like shuttle bus, if available. Taxi the next option. BART is too complicated for me. Your hotel should be a good reference.
cover your bunghole in SF
Personal experience?
IC has a uncovered bunghole wherever he goes.
Love the cities of SF and SD themselves...their sports fans are a bunch of tools.
"IC has a uncovered bunghole wherever he goes."
Which he probably looks to get plowed by Bubba at every opportunity.
Wish I could contribute to your questions, but have not spent any time in SF since the early 70's, it was a fun few days though, just before the Air Force shipped me to Guam as part of the VietNam effort.
SF Giants fans aren't bad and it's tough to find a better park to watch a game.
49ers and Raiders played each other every preseason for decades. Then 2011 happened and fans started taking bullets. 49er Seahawk game in SF this year won't be for the timid either.
Search function seems to work well.
I'm just lucky my memory works at all.
Good thing for you that Timmy posted that link. I didn't want to type out the perfect trip plan again. I'll paste it just because it's so awesome:
You want to stay at the Hotel Potter at 9th and Mission in the Civic Center. You've got the Go Go Market, Club 93, and Re-Leaf right there. You're just a few blocks from San Francisco's best restaurant, Gyro King. A show at the O'Farrell Theater is something you just can't miss when you're there. Then top off your trip with some delicious Brisket at Baby Blues.
BART from downtown to Balboa Park station then the muni-Candlestick express to the game...should be pretty easy and there should be all kinds of info on line...I'm sure there will be many Packer fans making this trek.
Great town!
Thanks to all for the ideas - very helpful. We are sitting with some friends who are long time ticket holders. Ended up finding a good package deal to stay downtown near Union Square, so looks like we will take the BART/Candlestick express. It's also the wife's first time in SF, so looking forward to the trip.
When in a crowded bus, you'll probably be fine 99% of the people are cool, but be aware of your surroundings & careful of pick-pockets
and have steak and eggs at Tad's on Powell St. I'm sure your hotel will be close....their prices aint bad, service is good and their breakfast is great
