To Satori's point. Jennings hasn't flat out said it's his last year in GB, only that it might be. Here's the article I mentioned.

This has been covered well in another thread. We'll have to see what Jennings is asking for. AR and CM3 are bigger priorities.

It's going to be tough for Boykin to see any significant playing time. But going undrafted and cut by Jacksonville and then making this team at WR shows he's not afraid of hard work. He pretty much needed to have a mistake free camp and a little help from Borel and Gurley. Hope he does well.

Not sure about that. Walden gets added to the roster for sure but Jones might not be the guy sent packing. TT loves his linebackers running down the field on ST's.

My guess is the odd man out will be Ross.

As for Neal, there might be an injury by then. I think Merling basically has 4 weeks to prove his worth to the team.

Another interview via NFL.COM:

quote:

Jennings discussed the possibility of playing for another team in 2013 with Eric Davis on Tuesday’s β€œNFL AM”.

β€œIt’s the nature of the game,” Jennings said. β€œThis is the business. You never know what’s going to lie ahead and you just go out there and play each day, and play each play. And that’s what I’ve done for the past six years here (in Green Bay).

β€œDo I want to leave? Absolutely not. This is No. 1 choice. The reality of it is I don’t know my future. Like you (Davis) said, you’ve been through it. It’s tough when you’ve put in so much time, but hey, we still got time.”

Jennings video interview

He also has some fun with a "Few Good Packers".
I think Jennings is taking the right approach. It's a business and he gets that. He's going to get a huge payday whether it's from the Packers or somebody else. All he has to do is play his ass off and stay healthy.

When you consider GB needs to resign Arod, CMIII, Raji and Jennings, he might just be the odd man out.

The two players that have really impressed me are Arod and CMIII. Both of them are extremely underpaid and you don't hear a peep out of them. Business as usual. I find that very refreshing in today's sporting world.
Yeah, I'd much prefer Jennings give the canned "the contract will take care of itself, I'm focused on a Super Bowl" answer, but I think we'll live if this is as outspoken as our guys get. The truth is that he will get paid a ridiculous WR contract that he deserves, and there's a chance it doesn't come from GB.

Great point about Clay and Rodgers, but I think they also know for sure they're not going anywhere. I would say Jennings situation is far less certain.
Some may remember, but Packer Update had an article awhile back suggesting another option would be to franchise tag him in 2013.

Would that be ideal? No. Would Jennings be happy with it? Obviously not.

But from a pure business standpoint, PU pointed out it may make the best sense.

If GB does that, the post new CBA cap hit isn't nearly as high as it once was. IIRC something like 9.5 million. Speculation is that Jennings would be looking at somewhere around 11.5 million a year with a new contract and would want a 4-5 year deal because he knows at his age this would be his last high $$ contract.

By franchising him, you would give Randall Cobb 2 years (this one and next) to really come into his own. It would also allow Jordy or him to become a true #1 and going into 2014, Jennings would now be turning 31. Guys like DJ Williams and Finley would still be plenty young.

Not saying he wouldn't get offers if he decided to go elsewhere but a soon-to-be 31 year old WR isn't as appealing as one who's 29 in March 2013. It wouldn't be what most fans would want but then again this is a business. Jennings knows that as does TT.

This is yet again another example of where you're glad your GM isn't the HC and that TT maintains a distance from these players.
I know I am going to get **** for this, but I will say it anyways. Flippen AJ Hawks ridiculous contract is going to really bite us in the ass.

6.5 toward the Cap this year, 7 next.

This is TT's biggest mistake.. There haven't been many, Bustin H and this contract are the only two that come to mind. Maybe Jenkins, but that's more of a hindsight argument.. Or.. You could look at it as he should have sent Hawk packing and Kept Jenkins.. What he end up getting paid?
Jennings can play for any team he likes, the decision is 100% his to make

IF he listens to his agent, he'll be gone. if he listens to his head and heart, he'll be a Packer for life

My guess is GB will offer a 2 year extension at competitive prices so Greg gets one more bite at the apple, same as with Finley.

I doubt he'd be willing to take a deal like Finley's. At his age, Jennings is looking for one last big contract.
If the Packers need Jennings they will pay him, if not they will let him go.
If Finley has a monster year he will be the center of the Packers offence after Rodgers. The Packers will need to pay him. If not the Packers will let Finley go and pay Jennings.
I also think Ted likes drafting (big) Wides. And I think he may like turning the spot over so he always has a up and coming wide.
And as we all know Jennings has been on the bubble for years.

I could see Boykin sticking until the Packers have a better sense of whether or not Jennings will be a Packer in 2013.

Jennings came out again today and said he feels this is his last year in GB.

Boykin could very well be the man off the 53, but it wouldn't mean he's going anywhere but straight to the practice squad.

An injury the first week could also decide this and I bet it actually does.

In cutting him in 2013, the Packers would save 100K off the cap. That's it. So unfortunately, that money isn't going to other contracts where it's needed.

It's what makes that contract an especially unattractive extension TT did. And in saving just 100K, almost a lock AJ won't get cut. Because GB will be taking a 6.9 mil cap hit anyway so as Packer Update reported earlier this year, it would make next to no sense in cutting him in 2013.

I just hope he plays like he did in 2010. He doesn't have DJ Smith riding his ass which is unfortunate. I was hoping it would be Bishop and Smith and if anything, Hawk is playing at a much higher level because he has talent behind him forcing him to play better. Maybe that still happens with Moses.

But AJ doesn't have a lot of pressure on him. Which usually doesnt translate well.
Money wise the PAckers current have 11.6 million under the cap.
Then from what I remember
Woodson is getting 13 million
Hawk I think 6 but if Packerboi is rightnot that much can be saved.
That come to about 30 million in cap space if the Packers want to create it by cutting Woodson and Hawk next year.
Rodger makes 9 million top QB make about 20 million. So the Packers will need about 11 million more per year to take care of Rodgers.
But the CBA cap rules are so different now then they were who knows what the Packers can do.

They're going to have re-negotiate it (a la Driver), then. Assuming Hawk wants to stay.

It might only save $100 grand off the cap, but if he's cut that's still real money Hawk wouldn't be getting if he digs his heels in.

Bishop will be back next year, and if Smith plays the way I expect him to then Hawk won't even be guaranteed a job.

Front office is definitely going to have to get creative to keep who they want to keep.
I'll try and find the cap info for 2013. I know his cap hit this year was something like 6.4 mil. So obviously that wasn't going to happen. Maybe it gets more reasonable in 2013 but I could have sworn it wasn't a whole better then either.

Though TT won't admit it now, it was a bad deal. If they do keep him in 2013, of course that doesn't mean he has to be a starter. But you're right. If no re-negotiating takes place, that's one hell of an expensive back up.

TT has done WAY more good then bad over the years.

But you do have to stratch your head at his LB contracts.

AJ Hawk

Poppinga

Chillar

All curious deals at best.
The term they use in the Boykin article to describe him is "consistent". I was watching the Virginia Tech - Georgia Tech game last night. The announcers said they asked the VT coach about what the loss of Boykin would mean this season. They said the coach replied "we will have more big play ability, but we won't be as consistent". He obviously does a lot of little things well.

MM said that a player has to keep learning to stick around. When they stop learning, there are decisions that need to be made. I don't think that Gurley or Borel imporved enough (if any) over last year to warrant sticking around.
