RT @RapSheet: I'm told #Packers offer to Clay Matthews already eclipses DeMarcus Ware money ($13M per year)

@AdamSchefter 15m
When deal for Packers LB Clay Matthews gets done this off-season – and it will – it will come in at or north of $13 million a year in new $.

Is $13mm/year too much? I don't think so. Some might say that 20%-25% of your cap in two players is too much. But if you can lock up one of the best passers and one of the best at rushing the passer, you do it. And remember, it is about cash-flow and money in first 3 years.

That's very surprising. I would have thought Matthews deal would be a little less than Ware's 7 year/78 million deal and only be a little higher than LaMarr Woodley's 2011 6 year/61 million deal. The reason I compared CM3 to Woodley was that their situations are similar...similar numbers, accomplishments, etc. Ware was ahead at this point in his career, numbers wise, than Matthews is (by about 10+ sacks and 60+ tackles). That's not a negative on CM3, he's a game changer, but Ware has had an amazing career and should be the standard for how to gauge where a contract should be for 34 OLBs.

I hate the idea of paying 2 players around $35 million a year, but there's not much the Packers can do. That's the ridiculous price of doing business in the NFL these days.

Except the salary cap in 2009 was $123 million. In 2013 it is...$123 million.
I think everyone on the planet knows that AR isn't going anywhere. But CMIII, I'm sure would love to stay, but I don't think it's clear cut that he doesn't move on. So, it makes sense to get CMIII's done, then get back to AR, and tell AR and his agent, look in order for the Packers to stay competitive this is what we can do (20+ M)/year? Whatever. Then if he feels he's being disrespected and wants to move on, more power to him, and fans will hate him like they do Brent, albeit for different reasons.
We should let ARod and CM3 hit the road. Think of all the free agents we could sign then.

Or we could do what TT is doing, sign our own star players and support them as best he can, mainly through the draft. Really, does the part of the mind that says we have to pay cm and arod communicate with the part that demands free agents galore?

I've wondered if TT isn't thinking the same thing. I don't know that he'd have any leverage because I figure CMIII would break the bank as a free agent. I just hope it doesn't come down to anything close to that.
Over the past few seasons Thompson (and Ball) have structured contracts so that in-season bonuses are tied to game(s) played. Available and accountable.

Woodson for example, if he were still on the roster, would have a $1mm Game bonus paid out for 2013 in 1/16 amounts for each game played. Play 8 and he'd only get $.5mm.

What's the contract status of:

Raji.
Jones.
Finley

Are those the only 3 notable players that aren't locked up for the future?

If 1% of your cap space is tied up on a QB named Ponder then your GM is an idiot.

Packers are able to see the problems they have and do what is necessary to fix it. the Packers defense had problems with the pistol offense so they sent their defensive coaches down to Texas to see what they needed to do to be better. Maybe next year, the Vikings ownership can send the Vikings GM and coaches to Green Bay so they can finally learn how to properly build a team. I am sure that Ted Thompson would love to teach you guys a few pointers.....

For 2013 the cap $$ is ~ $123mm (IIRC).

Jared Allen $17.1mm cap hit
Adrian Peterson $13.9mm cap hit

25+% ($31mm) of your cap on two players?

Too much in my opinion. I really hope they look at extending Jared Allen and getting that cap number down. Like to see that happen and give some of that money to bring Winfield back for another year or two.

Peterson deserves his for this year. Not Allen though.
