"The players most disadvantaged by the lockout are youngsters like second-year defensive end Jerry Hughes. The Colts' 2010 first-round draft choice played in only 12 games last season. He made only six tackles."

I wanted this guy badly last year, but in retrospect the much less glamorous but much more important position to fill was OT. And at least after one year, Bulaga is way, way ahead of Hughes in terms of production. I think taking Sherrod over Reed or any other OLB available at the time will prove to be just as prudent. Having two young #1 picks at OT is just a great feeling in protecting our franchise QB for years to come. I think we'll finally see Thompson go for that OLB complement to Matthews in next year's draft. And that's assuming none of the four young OLBs we have -- Jones, Zombo, Walden, Elmore -- emerge to erase that as a need. Certainly undrafted and mid-to-late round guys like T. Williams, Shields, Jenkins, Jolly, Bishop, Sitton, Tauscher, Driver and Grant have proven it can be done.

I agree. Actually, OLBs that went after we took Sherrod were Sheard, Ayers and then Reed. I do think Sherrod was a better pick for us than any of them. But I used Reed to make my point since so many analysts had projected him to us. Actually, McGinn reported that it came down to Sherrod or Bowers, but supposedly Packers' braintrust wasn't convinced Bowers could successfully transition to being a 3-4 OLB. Point is, they still liked Bowers (even with his injury risk) more than Sheard, Ayers or Reed.
Goalline, no doubt Bowers, when healthy, is by far a better prospect, pound for pound, than Sherrod. He likely would have gone in top five picks in the 1st if not for his injury. But that injury was severe enough to scare away all teams until Tampa Bay took him a good ways into the 2nd round. He's clearly high risk/high reward. And no reason for us to take that risk. He may become a demon 4-3 DE for TB, but may not have been as good a 3-4 OLB.

and given the still on-going Justin Harrell injured #1 pick, and even tho TT probably doesn't care much what the rest of us think, I'll bet he's a little gun-shy about drafting a player with health concerns at #1 again - especially at this point with a SB trophy in the case and SB MVP at QB.
I wonder now, with the benefit of hindsight -- with what Newhouse showed, with Sherrod's slow start (factoring in the lost time due to labor dispute), and seeing what Reed and Sheard accomplished -- whether Thompson would still have taken Sherrod. Even Justin Houston, who was still available in the 3rd round, had a great impact for the Chiefs and would have looked awfully good as a Packer. Water under the bridge, but Reed, Sheard or Houston would have really helped us this past year. Hopefully, Thompson finally addresses this off-season.
