Dum, De Dum Dum

"Now, as stories continue to surface that Spielman and the Vikings could opt to use that No. 3 pick to address a different position -- LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne is in the conversation and Oklahoma State receiver Justin Blackmon should be too – we’re providing another set of data that’s worth considering. For those teams who do use top 10 picks on offensive linemen, what kinds of dividends to they usually see? Here’s a quick look at the 23 offensive tackles taken in the top 10 over the past 20 drafts.

The figures might surprise you. Of those 23 tackles, only four posted winning records overall during their stays with the teams that drafted them.

The two best left tackles taken in the past five years? Joe Thomas and Jake Long have been Pro Bowlers since the day they entered the league. Yet they’ve also been on teams with a combined .410 winning percentage and zero playoff wins in their nine seasons combined.

Gee pass on a guy to protect your QB for a decade or more because some teams who got the best LTs couldn't find a decent quarterback or this year's playoffs had two injury replacements at LT? (Newhouse for Clifton, Svitek for Baker). Talk about not understanding what your data actually shows....

Spielman trying to prove he's a big boy GM fishing for a trade.

The Browns are going to call him up on draft day like their interested, put him on hold, wait for the clock to expire and then make their pick.

It's much better to have the WR or CB and suck than LT and suck.
It would be a smart move by the Vikings to downplay the interest in a tackle. While Kalil is definitely the best tackle in this draft Riley Reiff is also a solid top 10 value. If the Vikings are looking to deal the pick, they are best off playing like they want someone else because they could probably net more in a trade to a team interested in a CB or WR. Teams would be more attracted to Kalil than Reiff, but if you can get Reiff a few picks later and at a cheaper price then why sell the farm to land Kalil? But if you are looking for a receiver, there is a much bigger falloff between Blackmon (legit top five) and the second best guy at the position (right now that would probably be Kendall Wright who is mid round one). The difference is even greater at cornerback, where the top guy is Morris Claiborne (legit top five) and the next best is either Janoris Jackson or Dre Kirkpatrick (who are in the range of #20 overall).

It would be even better for the Vikings if they didn't have Peterson and could effectively sell the idea that they have real interest in Trent Richardson, because I don't know if there is another round one running back in this draft.
Flush my last post as Reiff appears to be a dropper. Just put together a new board and:

OT:
Matt Kalil - Southern California (#3 overall)
Riley Reiff - Iowa (#16 overall)
Mike Adams - Ohio State (#27 overall)

CB:
Morris Claiborne - Louisiana State (#4 overall)
Dre Kirkpatrick - Alabama (#15 overall)
Janoris Jenkins - North Alabama (#21 overall)

WR:
Justin Blackmon - Oklahoma State (#6 overall)
Michael Floyd - Notre Dame (#14 overall)
Kendall Wright - Baylor (#20 overall)
Rueben Randle - Louisiana State (#29 overall)

RB:
Trent Richardson - Alabama (#5 overall)
David Wilson - Virginia Tech (#30 overall)

Would note that I included a list from The Sporting News in this compilation and Reiff was shockingly low on their list (#57 overall). Not sure if that is realistic. However, even if I exclude their list entirely Reiff comes out at #11, so I really wouldn't call him a solid top 10 value as of today.

He's a Hawkeye so I can only assume he assaulted a female or is dealing drugs.

Wait, he's an OL, not a RB. He probably got knocked the f out by a truck while riding his moped.

Accidents happen
Comparing Kalil to Joe Thomas is a bit of a stretch IMO

Thomas might be the best OT in the entire NFL

Personally, if I were Minnesota I'd really have to look at Blackmon or Claiborne instead of Kalil. The Vikings pass defense is horrific and outside of Harvin (who's more of a gimmick WR) what WR do they have that scares other teams?

I hope they draft Kalil
The thing is this draft is a lot deeper at receiver than left tackle and cover-2 corners don't have to be high picks. Kalil shores up a glaring weakness for a decade while they can still grab a corner and receiver in rounds 2 & 3.

Exactly why the comparison is being made. If Kallil has that type potential they must take him.
I think GB should bundle a pile of picks to move up one slot in the first round and take Joe Adams - based on Packer Joe's new board.

I think that who any given team takes high in the draft should reflect the capabilites of the coaching staff. If developing OL is something they do well, they might want a different position player with NFL ready skills. I don't know about the Vikings. But I would factor that into their decision making process.

I don't see anyone here comparing him to Thomas. I do see him being compared to all LT's drafted since Thomas.
Way too much is put into "measureables" with these players. They get downgraded on arm length and other stupid stuff.

How long were Tony Mandarich's arms compared to Mark Tauscher's? Bench reps? 40 time? Vertical?

Kalil has 34 1/2 arms, perfect.

Joe Thomas has 32 inch arms, but then again, he is an athletic freak. Kalil was born to play LT.

He does like pot smoking WR's though.
