The first-string players are making the refs look pretty solid, actually.
good lord, this is terrible. WAY worse than I thought it would be.
Watching delayed on DVR...flag on Perry for 15 was a joke.

While I felt the replacement officials did a substandard job last night. I don't see any real movement in negotiations until Shannon Eastin flags someone 15 yards for "Refusing to open up and communicate".
it is astonding to me that, with all the billions the nfl makes, that they would jeopardize the product this way. just pay the refs what the want and move on. i'm sure it is a drop in the bucket. sheesh.

Next time the real ref mess things up the NFL will say do you want us to get that women replacement ref wistle out of the HOF and put her back on the field? What was worse about this game? The Perry call was bogus, but I chalk that up to a college ref applying NCAA standards to the NFL, something easily correctable.
ESPN seemed to be in the tank for complaining about the replacements, but overall I did not think they did any worse than what the regular refs provide. For those with short memories, here are some comments from the more recent Packer games.

The only call they DID seem to be on top of was the Suh play. The rest of their performance was subpar. Very subpar.

As far as Thursday game, yes there were many inconsistancies. They will almost never call holding unless it directly effects the play, such as the hole the runner went thru or a QB sack. As for PI we can all scratch our heads on that.
I only had to search as far back as the Thanksgiving game, and these are a minimal fraction of the complaints of the regular refs. I think the replacements should get more of an opportunity to either prove themselves or screw up before declaring they are much worse than the regulars.
The problem is the replacements have to better than the regulars. If the replacements call games the same as before, the screaming won't be "that was a horrible call" that we hear every year. It will be "That was a horrible call that wouldn't have happened with the regulars". Of course is BS but it's a convenient fallback.
The only win for the replacements is to call games as close to perfect as possible. And that's never going to happen. Fan's see penalties on every play if the mood strikes them. And calls against them are almost always horrible calls.
I don't think the replacements will call games as well as regular refs. And I think the venom from fans over a league making billions deciding to go on the cheap for something as important as officiating is going to be severe.

Yes, I'm pretty sure you're onto something here.
Horse$hit non call on a blatant PI against Nelson that saved a TD for the Bengals...watching the Cincy broadcast, and even their honks said that was a bad call, and the Bengals got away with one.
It doesn't look good. If they start the season with these replacement refs, we're going to see some games with really bad calls.

Ive met the man. He cares about the league. He would do anything for the good of the league.
Things like not charge a certain team for tampering when they're trying to get a new stadium built.
Whatever is in the best interest of the league, that's what he'll do. Even controlling the outcome of games IMO

I hear you, but there's no way I buy that he'd control the outcome of a game.

I liked the way they called the game last night..
They let the corners be a little more physical than we are accustom to seeing. That plays well into the games of Tramon and Wood, but could hurt our offense.

I thought the ref's did a great job last night. Very quick at calling the penalties and moving the game along.
But I'll be willing to bet Goodell made damm sure the very best replacement crew was in NY for a reason. The next best three crews will probably be on Sunday and Monday prime time games as well while Jacksonville - Minny get the "I've done a few pop warner games" crew.

that's for sure. those guys did a good job, with the exception that no-call "12 men on the field" whistle before the play.
we'll see how the other 15 or so crews do this weekend. I worry that they'll get blasted to missing calls that even the regular officials would've missed.

Exactly.. A lot of these announcers are ex-union guys and will be looking to blast the "scabs" any chance they get.
