Thankfully we have been blessed for over 20 years with some very good QB play.

As painfully as it sounds - think of life without ARod....what if Pakrzboi mancrush Bobby "Bushea" McClellin had knocked ARod out of foosball.

Which QB in this years draft would you take in the first round if the packers had a desperate need...and you were forced to make a QB choice.

Been through many contract negotiations in my line of work, including 1st chair several times, so know a little bit about leverage and how it works in trying to reach agreement

Johnny Manziel has bust written all over him. A kid who gets the willies when pressured, thinks he's Gods gift to football and takes risks that will make him look like more of a chandelier then RGIII has become. Dude is going to get flattened and many feel he has no feel for making his reads. And that's when he's not running around like an idiot.

Having said all that, I'd love to see Minnyhana take him. He'd make an awesome Viking.

If he falls (and he won't) to 21, Bortles is about the only one who'd be hard to pass up IMO.

Echo the thoughts regarding Johnny Football. Already a poor fit for the NFL, his raging ego won't help. Can't wait to see him fall, especially if he ends up with the Vikings.

Bortles would be good for a development-type situation. Unfortunately whatever team picks him won't be in that spot.

Bridgewater has been slipping down boards lately.

Carr is pretty good, but he's not Top-5 worthy. The result of teams being desperate for QBs.

The Bears may also look at QB at this draft, as I've predicted here in my consensus mock:

14
 QB TEDDY BRIDGEWATER
LOUISVILLE

51
QB JIMMY GAROPPOLO
EASTERN ILLINOIS

82
QB TOM SAVAGE
PITTSBURGH

117
QB LOGAN THOMAS
VIRGINIA TECH

156
QB BRETT SMITH
WYOMING

183
QB DAVID FALES
SAN JOSE STATE

191
QB KEITH WENNING
BALL STATE

It's tough to watch this and feel confident about using a first rounder on Teddy. There are a few too many shaky throws in a scripted format here. His game tape is better than this clip but you can't pass on throwing at the combine and then do this at your pro day.

But doesn't the game tape tell a different story?  Can't explain his pro day but sure liked what I saw during the season.

2 years ago, I watched Manziel and thought he was the next Joe Montana.  He was fantastic and the way he could throw accurately on the dead run either left or right side just impressed the heck out of me.

But wow, he could not have handled that success any worse.  I think Manziel is going to be good, but that arrogance he has may keep him from being great.  He strikes me as someone that needs to get humbled to realize the kind of hard work it will take to be great in the NFL.  That said, I think his accuracy and quickness will keep him from being a bust.

Agree Finn that QB pro days shouldn't count much in the evaluation. But some of those throws were throws 1st round talent shouldnt make. He had no shortage of team visits though so we'll see.

None. There's not a 1st round worthy QB in this draft. Top 15 QBs should be able to step in immediately and not embarrass themselves...like Andrew Luck, Sam Bradford, Matt Ryan, Ben Roethlisberger, etc. They may have flaws or make mistakes, but they also make some really good plays and show that they can play QB in the NFL. Then you have system QBs who get overdrafted because of need...Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, Robert Griffin, etc.

2014 has a lot of system QBs who, IMO, aren't NFL ready right out of the gate. Bortles is the top QB because of his physical ability, potential, and because George O'Leary players are generally well coached. He's really unproven, but he's the only one I would consider taking in r1. Manziel and Bridgewater are wildly overrated and I don't believe either will find success in the NFL or even belong in r1. Tom Savage is my #2 QB behind Bortles and I think he's actually the only QB in the draft who could be respectable from day 1 in the NFL, but he's a 23 year old Senior who only actually played 2 years because of wacky transfers. Jimmy Garopolo is my #3 QB and is a guy who could be a really good QB in the NFL...his play reminds me of Aaron Rodgers at Cal. He's still pretty raw right now though and like Aaron Rodgers I see him needing a couple years of clipboard holding before he's ready to play.

I'm with you GD on none of these guys being worth a high first, if a first at all (typical overdrafting of the position not withstanding)

In actual game play I saw the latter part of the Louisville game for Bortles. He looked good, but raw IMO. He did stand out at the combine during receiver drills when in the deeper cone drills throwing to guys he was unfamiliar with. When they cut on the wrong side of the cones he anticipated the spot where they would/should be after the route adjustment (ala getting bumped off the exact route) and placed the ball where they should then end up. I liked that he threw to a spot but adjusted the final spot based on what he saw during the route rather than flattening it out and just trying to throw to the guy.

To me, it looked like Manziel was throwing to a guy in college, ala Teblow. That generally is not a successful venture in the pros.

Oddly enough, I'd take Bridgewater, too. Something about him that I really like.

I wouldn't take Manziel. He thinks his chit don't stink, and that kind of attitude doesn't work well as a rookie coming into the league. A rookie QB needs to be humble, realize that the game is much different...much faster, and WORK to become great.

As incredible as Aaron Rodgers is now, he didn't just roll out of bed like that. He worked his butt off. He strengthened his arm. He studied...a lot.

I think Manziel is in for a rude awakening. Defensive linemen in the NFL are much faster, on average, than those in the NCAA. If he thinks he can scramble around like he has at A&M, he's going to get flattened.

To me Manziel seems like he wants to be a combination of Fran Tarkenton (run around and make plays), Bert Farve (da gunslinger gambler) & Joe Namath (night life party animal). Perfect fit for the purple chokers in minnehaha land. JMHO

Bridgewater's frame/build scare me, I am skeptical he can hold up taking NFL level punishment. The AAC/Big East isn't known for being unforgiving to QBs so I don't know how much punishment he's taken in college. He's height is fine, but to me he looks thinner/lankier than both RG3 and Mike Vick and neither one of those 2 have held up very well in the NFL injury wise. That said, I think Bridgewater has a good football IQ and I think he could add some muscle, but I don't think physically he's ready to step in immediately. Aaron Rodgers was kind of scrawny in 2005 and based on his early career injury history, he wasn't ready to take an NFL beating right away. Bridgewater could play in the NFL, but he will need some development time IMO.

Manziel's mental toughness is what scares me about him. Everyone talks about his height, which to me is still a legit concern, and they compare him to Senecca Wilson and Blew Brees, but those guys have tremendous mental toughness. They don't frustrate easily and while I think their height limits them at times, they stay strong and find ways to get the job done. I haven't seen that from Manziel. I won't say he breaks easily, but when the going gets tough he seems to shut down. I don't think he will be able to handle the pressure of stepping in immediately and being a franchise QB. Like Bridgewater I think he will need a couple years to sit and learn how to play in the NFL...and probably get the NFL "lifestyle" out of his system early so that when he does become the face of the franchise he won't be an embarrassment.

It's hard (for me) to keep in mind the context of the original post, which was the immediate need for a QB. I wouldn't want to pick any of these guys for that role, but if I had to, I'd still go with Bridgewater.

With that said, I don't know that he would be the QB for MM. If the offense/plays could be tailored to play to Bridgewater's strengths (10-15 yard passes, and let the receivers get YAC), he could excel, but McCarthy's tendency is to 'take his shots'.

The perfect place for Manziel? New York Jets.
