Why are we trading David Bowens?

Line of creditors
I admit to shock yet pleasant surprise that Bowens is still even in the NFL, now having received a decent free-agent contract to be a rotational player on the Browns’ defensive line. Nine years ago with the Packers, I spent much time dealing with creditors chasing Bowens throughout Northeastern Wisconsin. Although his time in Green Bay was brief, Bowens’ file was thick, full of unpaid bills and repossessed cars. I did suspect that behind that carelessness appeared to be a good person who had the smarts to get his act together -- and has evidently done so. continue

I enjoy many of his insights into the workings of the Packers front office but do you really need to make public the guy's poor financial decisions days after he had the high water mark of his career? If you ask me details like that should remain private and I think Brandt made a poor, unprofessional decision of his own in sharing that with the public. The story of how he was traded was enough to carry the article, IMO.

I think it's a fair story. Bowens has managed to grind out a career twice as long as the average NFL player, but he's the type that'll probably file for bankruptcy a year or so after being out of football and struggling to hold on to a car salesman's job when he's in his 40s...
I think it was a good story about somebody overcoming obstacles in their lives.
I appreciate inside looks to NFL business and it is interesting.

I think Bowens has moved foward with his life and made improvments to his financial dealings. So it was a good story about a young man who played longer in the NFL than expected and has a career game against the Super Bowl Champs.Come on how many Dlineman get two pick 6's in their career let alone one game against a probowler.

Now how many can say they were perfect financial advisers when they were in their 20's?
Yeah, but how many of us would think it was right for someone we used to work for to tell the entire world about our financial problems? This is personal information, and Brandt is totally out of line to talk about it. He could have made his point without being anywhere near so specific. It served no purpose, and was very disrespectful of Bowens.
I didn't read it that way. I read it as someone over coming personal issues. I can see how it could be read the other way but I'm certain brandt didn't intend to be malicious or unprofessional.
One of the problems with the NFL is they tend to cover up junk like this. Maybe if more news got out about how some of these guys are such jerks and misfits, maybe, some of this behaviour can stopped, helped or be reduced.

....or some of us would actually look up of what he has a degree in from his college before running our mouths. Yeah and I'm betting he knows when Turkey day is as well.

oh and GBP1 and Pistol, did either of you guys bother to read the ENTIRE article? It's another pretty good article by Brandt with some humor attached to it. I'm not sure where you're getting the "junk like this" and "crap like this" comments and where exactly that's coming from if you bothered to read the entire article.

Early 20's at that. Maybe he just flat out grew up after being traded? I understand it may be hard for some Wisconsin sports fans to understand this, but some of these young immature athletics that come to our state can leave here, grow up and get their acts together. I know I know, oh the horror of it all to think that can happen

No, I did not read the article. The quoted part is enough. That part has nothing to do with football. That's my only point. GBP1 was thinking maybe it should be amplified. I disagree.

Maybe "crap" is too strong of a word. Change it to "personal stuff."

Agreed. None of our business.
The more stories like this that are published, the better. Reinforces the teaching we give our children and young athletes. It’s not just your dad or coach saying this or that could happen, it does happen – a lot!

Feel bad for the athlete who goes down this path initially and never recovers, but feel good for those you straighten things out.
