Since I'm going to have some free time for about a week or so, should we fire up the annual Webathon

I've come to the conclusion that copyright infringement could definitely be a downfall of X4 on the open forum. It's certainly obvious, when the editor of jsonline.com e-mails me in JULY, that we are being watched.

To help quell this potential tsunami, I'm going to create a Premium forum. In this forum we will be allowed to post Premium articles from the other Packer websites and discuss them without fear of repercussion. Everyone will be able to see the link to the forum but only specific members will have access. No guests.

So FRZ, How do I get access to the Premium forum

You simply donate at least $5 a year to the up-keep of X4. Think about that. That's just over 1 penny a day.

Hey justanotherpackerfan, yeah it's time to donate. sarcasm

The current Packer forum will stay status quo and I'm guessing we will use the open forum for most of our conversations.

I'm currently working on creating the forum today and will be adding some of you that have already donated. In the unlikely event that I missed someone that has donated, please send me a PM and I'll gladly add you.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks and enjoy the forums everyone.

Since, we just had a little bout of ID theft with a paypal credit card, I am a little leary though....would a check be OK?

And if so, could you PM me an address and what name to put on the check (I know mine goes on the bottom, its the one on the top I'm not sure of).

Thanks

I am with JAPF on this. Not a big fan of Pay Pal. Can you post an address or Pm it to me.....thanks
I think JSO would frown even more upon you charging members to access their articles. I think you can only charge for product that is your own.

Creating a premium forum is up to you, but the answer to possible copyright infringement is having moderators promptly removing offending items as soon as it is detected. Without knowing for sure, my guess is that JSO would not seek to shut down Timesfour so long as you and the moderators take care of it consistently and promptly.

[EDIT: IIRC, Scoop had conversations with JSO more than once, and they were always ok with things so long as copyrighted material was properly removed. Maybe ask Scoop about this.]

Who says I'm putting their articles in that forum?

They have no clue about what goes on in that forum. It's locked down away from the general public's eyes.

Of course not, they are using all of Benzene's posts for their content. Big Grin

(just kidding)

This is the equivalent of me purchasing Packer Insider and allowing you to sit down next to me with a beer & read over my shoulder. Is that copyright infringement? nope.

This also makes it more than clear about not posting that content on the open forum. A snippet here and there with a link to join the Packer Insider is fine. AAMOF, I'm sure jsonline would encourage that. Just don't copy/paste the entire article.
I guess I'm a bit obtuse. paperbag

If a little weasel at JSO pays his measly $5 and sees a copyrighted article in the "private" forum, then squeels like a silly 12 year girl old to his editor, whats the difference. I mean really, you know the squirly little weasels are lurking here, whats to stop one of the pissants from ponying up $5 to check it out, and then tattle. They do, after all, have no shame. Anything for a raise or promotion from the big chief editor. "Hey boss, guess what I saw at X4 in the private zone, its shocking and disgusting I tell you, its scandalous among many other reprehensible things. You just gotta check it out Boss"

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I dont know how this effectively solves the problem. If there was a problem to begin with. A snippet and link with credibility to the author was always fine before. Just not the whole enchilada. But again, I may be a bit obtuse on all this.

Regardless, every year I pay some dues for the vast enjoyment this forum brings me. What I pay in no way comes close to the amount of pleasure I get here (of course I have no life). It may take a couple days, but it will be on its way. Thats with or without a private forum.
Hello all. Well I used paypal FRZ and while its not much I sent a little.

Football season even pre-season cant start soon enough for me.
I agree with Durango.

While I may not say much I get a lot of enjoyment from the site during the season.

And being that unless the Pack really kicks some butt the on tv games will be fewer.Thats where the chat room comes in.

All the oh no no or yes yes and then the what the beep beeb beeeeeeb.Gives me that needed info on the game.

All that and the PACK.Yep just like being back in Milwaukee watching the game with the family.

Hey guys, I'm enjoying it and everything, but please stop bringing your stolen property over to my house. That's theft and it's just wrong.

But I got this idea see, everybody chip in a few bucks and I'll rent a storage unit, we can put it all in there. No one will ever figure that out (unless someone blabs it before I even start giving out the keys). And lets not quibble about whether it's right or wrong, no big deal since we can't be caught doing it...brilliant!!

Self-imposed exile has really suited you. You're doing an excellent job of staying away. Keep up the good work.

They have no clue about what goes on in that forum. It's locked down away from the general public's eyes.

As Durango Doug pointed out, any JSO employee could already be a member here and could conceivably gain access to this "private" forum. If JSO monitors this forum (which scoop previously said that they do), then they are aware of this thread and have a watchful eye on what is conducted here.

Since all of their premium content is by subscription only, my guess is that JSO would not want even snippets of their articles to be posted unless you have their permission to do so. As far as your analogy of having this premium forum be the equivalent of reading over your shoulder, I think a far better analogy would be you getting NFL Sunday Ticket (premium pay-for content), and then charging bar patrons (forum members) $5 each to watch the games at the bar (forum) outside Direct TV's headquarters (close enough that they have their eye on it).

Additionally, I think JSO would take exception to you or the moderators passively allowing their premium content to be posted without permission. IMHO, JSO would leave this forum alone so long as you and the moderators actively enforce JSO's copyright, no matter where it is posted here.

I am not trying to be a stick-in-the-mud. I just want this forum to be available for all of us for years to come.

Who's to say the $5 being charged isn't for live entertainment after the games are over? FYI, when you have NFL Sunday ticket at a bar you pay a premium price.

I disagree with this analogy. Maybe a better analogy would be I have NFL Sunday Ticket at my house and I charge you $5 to come over and watch the games. Of course, the free beer & brats I provide have nothing to do with the $5 surcharge. Wink

Ok, JSO is not the end all be all of premium content on the net. The money being donated is used to pay for this website NOT be a duplicate jsonline.com. While I'm certain SOME of the articles will be discussed in the premium forum, I guarantee it will not be all of them.

Jsonline obviously wants people to pay for their content. The only way to get people interested is to give them a teaser (or snippet) from the article with a link back to it. This site (and other sites who operate that way) is basically promoting Jsonline (at no charge to Jsonline I might add) in that way.

It's definitely a tightrope walking act but one I think both parties are ok with. Until I hear differently, I don't see an issue with this.

ROFL...now, aren't you glad nobody really pays attention to your posts?

If they did, you'd be banned (twice), like you asked, and you wouldn't be able to put up this meaningless crap.

I know...you can't help yourself. Poor thing.
Ok I am a little confused (nothing new I know)

But is JS ticked off because of people posting premium articles in full or taking articles in general from their site?

I understand them getting ticked about the pay sites (which I do not subscribe to so that leaves me out from posting those articles, so there goalline Razzer Wink ) But the other stuff should be fair game. There are people who check into here while at work {gasp!!! can you believe that?} and their company may have a firewall that would prevent them from accessing the link.

Whatever. The check is in the mail.

That's not JSOnline's problem. If your company has a firewall that prevents you from going to JSOnline, you're certainly not entitled to read that content elsewhere besides JSOnline.com. Really, it's simple: if you're going to read their full content, free or pay, they want you to go to their side. Increase their visits and page views, see their advertisers, and increase their traffic. That's how they set their ad rates, that's how they keep track of hits, page views, etc. If people are viewing their entire content without actually going to their web site, JSOnline will get heat from their bosses, they'll get heat from their advertisers -- it only makes sense. They are no different from any web site in this respect.

Those %^*#&! The jokes on them though, this explains why their popularity has decreased over the years.

And you would think by now they would have learned their lesson. Wasn't it you who got their forum shut down several years ago?
