James Jones disappointed in playing time

GREEN BAY – James Jones is fine with catching only one pass in last week’s season-opening win over New Orleans. It’s the number of snaps he played in the game that the Green Bay Packers wide receiver took issue with Wednesday.

Jones played just 19 snaps against the Saints, catching the only pass thrown his direction – for one yard, with 6 minutes to go in the game. Of those 19 plays, six of his snaps in what would be considered running formations – three tight ends, one back and Jones, or two tight ends, a running back, a fullback and Jones.

“I don’t care about the ball at all, but I truly, truly want to be in the game plan. Everybody plays this game because they want to play,” Jones said. “I’m not selfish; I understand we’ve got a lot of weapons, so I’m not saying I want the ball every play. But I think I deserve to be on the field more than I was.”

Jones said he didn’t have an issue with quarterback Aaron Rodgers not throwing him the ball more on the snaps he did play.

“Aaron’s got his hands full. We’ve got a lot of weapons. It’d be stupid for me to come up to Aaron and tell him I’m open,” Jones said. “Every receiver’s going to say they’re open on every play even when they’re covered. I don’t bother Aaron. Aaron throws to the open guy. He’s been good throwing to the open guy. Aaron doesn’t tell me to sub into the game. So if I’m not in the game, he can’t throw it to me on the sideline.”

For his part, Rodgers asked media members not to make a big deal about Jones’ limited role last week.

“I just hope that you all as media personalities don't run to whoever is the low man on the catch totem pole every week because that's going to get a little bit ridiculous,” Rodgers said during his regular Wednesday media gathering at his locker. “It is Week 1, it's a long season and I'm going to throw it to the open guy. So I just hope you guys don't do that. You probably will, but that's a single plea from me."

On Friday, offensive coordinator Joe Philbin told reporters that he spoke with Jones following the team meeting that day to make sure he understood that he was still important to the offense. Jones caught a career-best 50 passes in the regular season last year and re-signed with the team for three years and $9 million in August.

“At the end of the day, we won the ballgame, that’s the main focus. Do I want to be more involved? No doubt. Who wouldn’t? But it is what it is,” Jones said. “It bothered me a little bit because I want to be involved. I’m a competitor. I want to be involved; I want to be able to help my team win. But at the end of the day, we’ve got a lot of weapons, the ball just didn’t come my way. Hopefully that changes. That’s all I can say. Practice hard and hopefully it changes.”

Jones wants more time..

Personally, I'd rather see JJ unhappy with playing time then content and not giving a shi*. So I really think he said a lot of the right things.

As for , atta boy.

Take his $3 mill average slary and divide it by 16 catches (1 each game), that equals $187500/catch. That is the easiest money made since Clyde (the glide) Duncan's 4 catches in 1985. He shouldn't complain to much.
I don't think he did, Ghost. He answered a question.

And he sure as heck didn't create the headline.

You knew this was coming from JSO. There's an editor over there thinks this kind of crap delights us all. Gets his jollies out of it. He's probably whacking it right now.

Basically, what Kiel said.
Great statement by Rodgers. With as deep as they are with pass catchers, at least one guy is going to have a crappy stat line every week. There are about 25-30 catches to go around, and at least 8 guys who can be open on most plays and who catch the ball well. That's just how it's gonna be. This is also the JSO spinning something a bit to stir the pot - I agree with that as well. Nothing new.
Actually kittens, this is Jason Wilde however don't be holding your breath you won't see the same things regurgitated from JSO. Clickity click. It's what it's all about.

Really, the only guy I wonder how he'd handle a quiet week or weeks would be Finley but based on his tallents I don't see him having more then 1 quiet week. Certainly not 2 in a row. And a quiet week might still be 2-3 key catches. He's just too talented to be shut out and creates match up nightmares.

He is however in a contract year and his agent may try to a bit to get him as much hype as he can to make him the most coveted FA and therefore not only raise Finley's salary but his commission to go with it. And the best way to stir the pot is to create rumors that your client wants/deserves the ball more.

He doesn't have a tool like Rosenpuke does he?

No doubt that was a nice preemptive strike on his part.

I like how he handles the media in general. He says "that would be a little ridiculous," understating what really needs to be said, which is more like, "Get your heads out of your asses."

Think they'll listen to him? {Sarcasm emoticon here}

JSO was on it first Here.

And right after the game last week, before Jones was available, with Philbin, Here.
Double LOL Packerboi, I didn't even read the byline. I thought you were posting the JSO blog with almost the same headline that beat Wilde by 35 minutes.

These guys are pushing eachother out of the way to get at the stirpot. JSO is so happy, they blog it first then promise a full article "that will be posted tonight."

Oh yippee skippee boys, we are just on the edge of our seats in anticipation!

To be honest, I don't think Finley has to put up big numbers to get a big contract. His talent is unquestioned. If he can get through an entire season injury free AND be a good teammate, he'll cash in big time.
Ha ha ha. So it seems the Milwaukee boys don't like anyone interfering with their God-given right to turn Packer coverage into a gossip tabloid.

"Please let us make a controversy out of James Jones!"

New guy: "So yes, Rodgers' plea is justified...But in Jones, at least this season, the matter is a little more complicated. Let'r rip.

Let'r rip? Who's been ripping them?
Cannot stand Bruschi. For that matter I'm sick of the media making God #2 to the Pats QB.

I don't know... The more I start to look around the league, the more I start to question this.

You got big time athletes showing up in the NFL at TE these days. It seems to be a growing trend since Gates. Plus, you still have your middle aged Vets putting up good numbers. A good TE is not as scarce as it once was.

Gates
Davis
Witten
Grahm
Hernandez
Clark
Winslow
Olsen

Maybe I am talking myself into this because of pending FA, but is he really that special when you look around the league?
The odds are, Jones will still be low man on the totem pole at the end of the season. Clearly, Jennings is the best Packer receiver. At this point Nelson is also better than Jones, and if Driver keeps it up, he's still better than Jones too. Cobb might not be as good as Jones yet, but it's close. Cobb certainly has more talent and more explosiveness. If Cobb had been pushed into action the way Jennings was as a rookie, I think you would see similar results.

When Jones was a free agent, I was in favor of letting him walk rather than paying him what he was expected to get from another team. When the Packers resigned him at $3 million/year, I thought it made a lot of sense. Now, after getting a glimpse of Cobb, it almost seems a shame that the Packers resigned Jones even at a discount.

Jones has never made any secret of the fact that he wants to be a starter. Being the 4th or 5th best WR on the Packers isn't going to sit well with him. When he resigned with the Packers, based on interviews he gave at the time, he expected to be the starter once Driver retired. That's no certainty at this point. In all likelihood, once Driver's contract is up after the 2012 season, Cobb will be taking that second starter position - whether Nelson and Jones are around anymore or not.

They may not be AS scarce, but there are still far more teams that need good TEs than there are that have good TEs. And of the ones you listed, Finley is clearly better than half of them. If he can stay on the field, he could be the best in the league - and there is always a premium to be paid for "best at their position" type of guys.

Very underpy idea. If we need a little more depth at a thin position by the bye or trading deadline, JJ is perfect bait. Reasonable contract with a decent resume. Now if he can make some of those catches that he dropped last year before that time, all the better.
I bet coaches wish they could ban all reporters from the locker room.

But it's in the deal with the the NFL and owners that there be full access, right? (more PR = more revenue.)

So all coaches can do is try to talk the players out of blabbing every last thing, so there won't be locker room issues.

Not sure Jones gets it.
