Bush Will Always Be Mr. July

OK, get ready for the avalanche of tweets and stories extolling the play of Jarrett Bush. Like the Cubs sinking in the standings, it happens every spring and summer. The seventh-year corner tends to look pretty good when lined up against an offensive scheme and a group of veteran receivers he knows like the back of his hand. The trouble always starts when a team with a different colored jersey takes the field.

Very few players get better in their seventh season. Bush is what he is – regardless of how many balls he intercepts in the coming weeks. He’s a physical corner who’s not afraid to get his nose dirty against the run. He can also be an effective blitzer at times. What he can’t do is consistently cover receivers – especially when lined up outside. He has questionable top-end speed and he lacks awareness with his back to the ball.
..

So is GB trying to put a boot up Shields rear to get him motivated or do you think Bush has a real shot at replacing him at CB?

It would be nice to see Bush take a step leap forward this year.

Undrafted, has had time to develop, gets great coaching from Joe Whitt and Capers, it's just time for him to start becoming more reliable.

That would imply that they were above last place in the standings to begin with... being a Cub fan I can assure you that never happens.
I think Bush is just fine as more of a slot corner playing a bit more on the inside.

But asking him to start as a boundary corner? Well, that has the potential to be a major weakness in the starting lineup. I'd like to think that by the regular season the Pack will have found someone better for that spot, but you never know.
In zone he isn't terrible, when matched up in man he gets burnt like Vinny Clark. (See James Jones catch yesterday in 11-on-11)

I also see it as emphasizing tackling. As soon as one of the younger guys (Shields, House, Hayward-who has done well the 1st two days) get's their sh!t together in that area Bush will be back to being mostly the ST ace on the team.
Not a Bush hater by any means but I do see PU's point that 7th year players rarely change colors. By then (think AJ Hawk), you know what you have and it's very rare suddenly they morph into something else.

Last year, I believe it was Leroy Butler who said what makes his position coach and Capers a bit nuts is that Bush practices extremely well. Does everything you want him to and really looks the part.

Then game-time, some translates on the field. However other stuff does not.

I know it's very early (we're talking 2 days of TC), but Casey Hayward is getting noticed. And he had a very good OTA season. It'll be interesting to see how that kid progresses as well.
I've spent the last 24 hours reminding myself MM and his staff have a better grasp on personnel, ability, and football knowledge in general than I do.

But we've all watched Bush over the years and the simple truth is he's been a glaring liability in coverage.

Maybe the coaches have seen him make the jump this offseason. If they say he should start then he should start. And if that spurs Shields, Hayward, and House to get motivated to secure a spot on the roster, mission accomplished.

Yep. Then again, I can't forget about Allen Barbre. I think the coaches were the only people in the world who didn't see that debacle coming.
Regarding Bush, I think we can all agree that he's a top flight special teams player, and a below average DB. The way it should play out is that Bush is the 6th CB (5th CB in base when Woodson is at safety) behind Woodson, Williams, Shields, House and Hayward. TT has loaded this roster with enough DB's to unseat Bush. Let's hope it happens.

- It's very apparent that the team is using Bush as a ploy to reinvigorate Shields from his down Sophmore campaign. Bush has heart, doesn't shy away from contact and has a knack for making some plays. His big downside is he lacks awareness with his back turned in coverage and doesn't have top-end speed. Both could be massively exposed, depending on the scheme and whether or D-line generates pressure.

I'd say Shields needs to step up massively through camp and pre season to claim a major spot on the rotation. Guys like House and our rookie from Vandy aren't going to make it any easier. That and the neck tat thing. Wink
I'd like to see Bush beaten out too. However, he was the "starter" last season after replacing Shields and continues to be so far.

I have to believe Shields will regain his form from his rookie season or House/Hayward will step up.

Here's what McCarthy had to say about the veteran who is currently the RCB on the first team --- "He's doing a very good job. He has played nickel and dime in the past. I think it's important to give Jarrett an opportunity to focus in on a position or two. I think that was a mistake I've made in the past -- trying to do too much with him. He's an extremely physical, competitive player."

Shields - Embarrassed and motivated

quote:

"When running backs or receivers break out, you just need to come in and tackle," Shields said. "It's just getting into that routine so when the game time comes, you're used to it. So that's the thing Coach Whitt told me to keep doing."

Sitting on a table in the Packers locker room Friday, Shields jolts up to demonstrate. "Tagging off," he calls it. This is how he must tackle in 2012. He lifts his arms out and pretends to wrap up at someone's ankles. Too often last season, Shields threw a shoulder at a running back or receiver. Before his senior year at Miami (Fla.), he never played defense, period.

Shields has replayed the string of missed tackles - including that Blount run - in the film room. The embarrassment soaked in.

"Yeah, I've seen them," he said. "I go back and watch them. And most of the tackles that I did miss, it was me not bringing my arms around. Wrapping up. I just tried to go in like that with my shoulder - not wrapping up."

I'm still thinking Hayward wins the spot.
From today's practice: * Rookie cornerback Casey Hayward had an interception for the second straight day. He jumped a slant by Diondre Borel and picked off a Graham Harrell pass.

Let's put it this way.. if in week one I see Bush matched up on the outside against Mario Manningham or Randy Moss 1 on 1, I will break out in a cold sweat immediately. I really don't think he can succeed out there on an island.

I still have more problems with Campen and Philbin and their job with the oline than Bush. He is what he is, a great special teamer that can help in a pinch but in no way do you want out there on a regular basis.

Wait until he plays against first-team receivers and first-team quarterbacks.
A rookie going against NFL players and he has 2 picks in his 1st three days of camp. Obviously overachieving.

@TyDunne
Defense stops offense in no huddle. Good coverage by Casey Hayward on Cobb for third-down inc.

"Doesn't make mistakes," - Joe Whitt. RT @TyDunne
Casey Hayward doesn't bite on PA, sticks with Jones on deep pass. Having a good practice

I can agree with this. But the problem is Bush has Pro Bowl caliber ST skills.
Considering how lost MD Jennings looked in limited play last night, and considering Bush is pretty solid "when everything is in front of him", why not slide him over to S? He supposedly is a good tackler and likes to hit. Maybe he doesn't have the mental stuff?
House Update:

Green Bay - Packers CB Davon House's injured left shoulder was doing considerably better on Friday afternoon, according to a source close to him, but he won't know the full extent of his injury until the MRI on him is read on Saturday.

House took the test Friday afternoon, the source said, and was scheduled to find out the results today, but his appointment was delayed until Saturday. It's unlikely House would practice Saturday even if the MRI were clean, but he reported that his shoulder felt fine as of Friday evening.
