Figured this warranted it's own thread.

It'll either be IR or they save him a spot on the 53. He's not eligible for PUP.

WR Jeff Janis said he's been told it will be 4-6 weeks after surgery to put screws in the bones around his index finger.

#Packers WR Jeff Janis said he had surgery on his broken hand. Doc put a couple screws in to fix the fracture.

Probably a Rodgers bullet. Janis! it seems, is brittle!

I'd IR him. This isn't the Mike Sherman Packers where you keep a spot on the 53 for someone who contributes on only 4 or 5 plays a game, or none at all.

More details:

If the fracture is significant, Janis still could play on special teams, the strength of his game, wearing a padded club around his hand. Often players are able to continue playing that way without risk of further injury.

If Janis is out 4-to-6 weeks, the normal recovery time for a fracture, the Packers are likely to put him on injured reserve. Such a move would cost Janis his entire third season unless the Packers chose to use the designated-to-return option on him.

Previously, the NFL required that a team planning to use its one designated-to-return benefit do it at the time the player was put on injured reserve. But during the offseason, the rule was changed so that a team may return any one injured reserve player who has been out at least eight weeks back to its 53-man roster.

The player would be eligible to practice after six weeks on injured reserve, but not eligible to play until eight weeks had passed.

Thus, the Packers could put Janis on injured reserve and if so needed have him back for the second half of the season. It also would allow them to keep all six of their other drafted receivers: Jordy Nelson, Randall Cobb, Davante Adams, Ty Montgomery, Jared Abbrederis and Trevor Davis.

Even if the fracture is minor, it could be a way for the Packers to stash Janis on injured reserve so they can maintain the rights to their seven top receivers

Put him on IR and solve the WR logjam.   If another WR goes down by mid season you can reactivate him.  That is unless another more pressing need for the IR reactivation pops up.

Seems like a no brainer at this point.

We frequently criticize the NFLFU on this site(usually justifiably) but I  think the Injured Reserve designated-to-return option, changed this off-season,  makes total sense. Allows you to play the odds if you have several players out .

We'll see if it makes sense in Janis' situation. Depends how long they think he'll be out.

The Packers ranked No. 1 in the NFL in punt coverage. Janis, a dominant gunner, led the special teams with 12 tackles, according to Pro Football Focus.

His special teams value was seen Saturday in Arizona. When Randall Cobb was knocked out of the Packers' divisional playoff game with a bruised lung, Janis was forced to play the final three quarters at receiver. He was “gassed” to the point coaches tried to remove some of his responsibilities to keep him fresh, but they had to keep him at gunner.

“I was happy for him and proud of him” special teams coordinator Ron Zook said, “because we did ask a lot of him. We tried to take as much off of him as we could. We spelled him on the kickoff team, but there’s things that we needed him. We needed him on the punt team, we needed him as a gunner. And he did a great job, and he sucked it up.

He often must beat two — and sometimes three — blockers whose sole goal is to prevent him from tackling the punt returner. So those 12 tackles in 16 games are awfully impressive. They tied for seventh in the NFL, two behind special team Pro Bowlers Justin Bethel and Matthew Slater

Everyone is welcome to their own opinion.  I just think you're really underselling just how good he is on ST's.  Guys that can do what he does are not easy to find.

Jason WIlde on ESPN radio made a pretty good point in that even if they did a club cast on Janis, as the gunner, it would be pretty damn hard to get off those blockers and shed double teams as he's trying to race down the field and make a tackle.

Gunners need that hand dexterity to rip players locked in with them and get away. I hadn't thought of that..

That is it - we are doomed.  Another start to a rash of WR injuries.  And he didn't even play in a real (assuming you could call a preseason game that) game.

BTW, sure it was Brett out there throwing to show he still has it with an eye toward coming out of retirement?
