From Demovsky this AM...

The market for free-agent receiver Greg Jennings is finally heating up. After two days with little or no action for the Packers free-agent receiver, Jennings is reportedly visiting the Minnesota Vikings today. ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the visit early this morning.

Talk about playing chicken with someone who doesn't care.

Let the Vajeens sign him, go get 50 balls thrown your way all season while AP totes the rock 30 times a game.

Your agent f'd up Gerg. Shoulda taken the $10 million when it was offered but you got greedy, and now you'll be lucky to get $8 million...from any team.

I've got mixed feelings when it comes to Jennings.  In 2008 through a vendor relationship, he actually came to our company picnic and hung out with us and brought his family along (wife and little girls were there).  He handled himself so well, he seemed like the coolest guy ever.  He came back again in 2009 along with Nick Barnett and once again was awesome.   That's the good side of Greg Jennings.

That said, I had heard from someone that after 2010 or so, he would pull the "Do you know who I am?" card at certain establishments around Green Bay in terms of getting the best table at a restaurant, etc.  That's just stuff I heard so take it for what it's worth, but Jennings sounds like a guy that maybe lost his way a little bit after he became a bit of a minor celebrity after the Super Bowl win.

I think he's probably mostly a good guy, but he may have let the fame go to his head a bit.  Hopefully over time he'll wise up and get back closer to being the awesome guy he was back before he got "big".

I think you're right on, fightphoe93.  He came into the league with solid perspective as a 2nd round pick out of a mid-major college.  After he became a damn good WR, made a few pro bowls, and won the championship as the #1 WR, his ego grew.  He was offered $8m back in 2013 which is about the equivalent of ~$9m now (based on salary cap growth).  No 30 year old, level headed WR should ever pass up that money to play with Aaron Rodgers.

By the way, that was a sorry-ass, half-hearted apology on his part (if that is what it was meant to be).  He felt a "disrespect" from Green Bay b/c they only offered him $8m/yr while the Vikings cut his ass, yet the Packers were more disrespectful?  The guy is delusional.  He bought into his own hype not realizing he was just a "good" receiver playing for an all-time great QB.  Looking back, TT was wrong for ever offering $8m/yr.  Thank God Jennings was dumb enough to pass.

I had only read his comments about "that guy" and "number 12" and assumed it was just an inside joke between him and Rodgers. You know, paying tribute in a back handed way. Ol whats-his-name; the guy who throws; you know who I mean.

Green Bay's management and coaching both have a method and I don't think either are too open to free improvisations by the hired help. But that's pretty much true of any organization. It's not that it's the only way to do things; It's the only way to do things HERE.

Brain-washing is something else entirely in my definition.

Jennings had only one or two years left in GB no matter what contract he would have signed with us. TT could see the decline in his separation, the nagging injuries, etc., and that's why he offered the $8 mill and stuck to it. I think TT was glad when Jennings didn't sign as it pushed other guys to fill his spot.

Of course Jennings is remorseful now, after seeing the numbers AR has posted and the team's record. Jennings' hindsight has shown him he wasted the past two years with a team that didn't have a QB when he could have had AR, and even now he's working for a lot less coin and with a QB who still has a lot to learn. Jennings is just hoping Philbin can help resurrect his status as a good WR. Good luck with that!

Unfortunately, I don't think Jennings would have learned those lessons had he stayed.  All in all, the Packers grew their wide receiver core and Jennings grew as a person.  The football gods work in mysterious ways.

In his two years in Minny. Greg led the Vikings in receptions, yards, TDs, and yards per game. Bye quite a large margin. And then they cut him and got nothing in return.

Spielman is an idiot. The Vikings suck.

CUPackFan:

He bought into his own hype not realizing he was just a "good" receiver playing for an all-time great QB.

Well, above this, you wrote, "damn good" and I think that is more accurate.  I think he was a very good receiver for a couple years there.  I am mainly thinking of the TD as well as the pivotal 3rd and fairly long receptions he made in the SB.

That was some really good stuff.

But, it's not like he ran a 4.2 40 and he isn't the biggest guy in the world.  There has been some decline.

Again, I'd give him more than a "just a good" in his best years for the Pack.

I agree, Jennings was a very good wideout from 2007-early 2011.  I wouldn't call him great, but very good as he could get deep, yet he also was a guy who was quick enough to get RAC yardage as well.

For one thing, Jennings isn't the same guy he was back then.  For another, I think the last 2 or 3 seasons the amount of WR talent that has entered the NFL is phenomenal, and the influx of talented young guys is forcing out the grizzled vets.  In Jennings case he isn't getting forced out of the NFL, but he isn't close being near the top of the class of WRs anymore like he was 5 years ago.

The amount of young WR talent is literally making guys like Jennings just a dime a dozen at this point.  .

His actions were so weird. Look how much the receivers for Peyton, Brady, Montana, Favre(yeah, the one who played for the Vikings) cherished the chance to play for a great QB. Look how desperate Larry Fitzgerald is to have a great QB.

Yet, the SOB had the best QB of them all, and he couldn't appreciate it. Can you imagine hearing Marvin Harrison whining about how Peyton doesn't give him more credit in the press? Can you imagine Jerry Rice taking a little more money to play for a running team?

Gerg got so big headed that he thought that offense was all about Gerg. He will never have another QB like "No.12" again.

Anybody catch HBO series premiere of Ballers last weekend? Dwayne Johnson plays ex-jock financial adviser chasing clients. John David Washington plays Ricky Jarrett. a WR who got cut by Packers after punching out a smack-talking dude in a bar. But he got a second chance with the Dolphins. Looks like the writers were inspired by a certain ex-Packer WR named Gerg.

Good point about the younger WRs, 'phoe93.

I won't ever know what it's like to be a "star", then have to consider giving up that limelight when age turns from friend to enemy. Especially if you can't perform because of an injury, and 'see' the young-gun replacement is going to take over your role. And money.

I'm sure the battle in your mind can indeed lead to strange behavior, as GL mentioned.

I wish he had re-signed with the Pack and everybody would have live happily ever after. Hindsight shows the reality, however; had he stayed here, his career would've likely finished similar to Driver's, if not James Jones'.

The $8 million per offer to Jennings was after the injury and late in the game. Media reports when he was at peak negotiating power indicated the Packers were offering in the range of $10-$12 million per and his claims of desiring to remain with the team ring really hollow. He needs to just be honest and acknowledge that he wanted to test the FA market and it didn't go particularly well.

Good point, Timmy. Read the poem "To an Athlete Dying Young" by A.E. Housman, whether tis better to die before the records are broken or grow old and watch as "the name died before the man." It helps understand a guy like Jennings and yes, Favre, who try so hard to hang on so long and keep themselves relevant on the field and in the news.
