Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley had a disappointing season in 2011. In February, he signed a two- year, $14 million deal which could be termed a put-up-or-shut-up contract, Tyler Dunne of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

Finley says This year, he's "freestyling."

"Just go out and let loose," Finley said. "Don't worry about anything."

"It's all about letting loose and just playing my game," Finley said. "Go back to high school a little bit and have fun with it now. Leave the NFL for what it is.

"Obviously, the NFL is paying us for what we do. You have to take it for what it is, man. I say, 'Go back and have fun like I was in high school.' "

Last season wasn't always fun. He caught 55 passes for 767 yards and eight touchdowns, but Finley also had three or fewer receptions in 10 games.

Many games, he was a decoy, a lawn ornament. And Finley doesn't care what any athlete coming off a knee injury says. Several times in 2011, he admits, he thought, "This could be my last play right here."

"When you're trying to switch yourself up for somebody else, you're not living," Finley said. "You're not living your life. You're not comfortable in yourself. Doing what I do, playing football, you have to be yourself."

Finley plans on flying out to California for three days after minicamp this week to work with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

"Having an off-season, having chemistry with your quarterback is a big key to success," Finley said. "I promise you."

This is the time of year everyone gets optimistic about players and their teams' chances of success - I get it. However, I'm incline to over look Finley's loquaciousness if it means he will play like he did against Arizona in the playoffs week in and week out this coming season.
I was fortunate enough to be at that Cardinals game and he was like a man among boys, the Cards kept trying different ways to stop him and he was on fire. One play I remember they grabbed his arms, drawing the interference flag, and he still caught it.
Players often struggle the year after coming back from ACL surgery, and I am hoping that is the explanation for Finley's struggles in 2011. I applaud Finley for taking extra steps to improve himself, and hopefully the dividends will pay off on the field.

Except Finley didn't have an ACL issue. He's never torn an ACL. IIRC it was a meniscus injury he had.

In fairness to Finley, I think he had complications from whatever was done to fix whatever was wrong. I seem to remember he had a staph infection or something of that nature that really set him back. If I'm wrong on that, feel free to correct me.

One thing is for certain going into 2012, there's no excuses. He's going to have a full off-season under his belt and it's time for him to turn from being a good but inconsistent player to being a great player. The ball is in Finley's court.
Fight-

Correct. He had a surgery to repair (vs remove) the ligament. That should have taken like 4 weeks to heal then he would be ok. Then he gets an infection. Has to have a central line placed into his neck to give him antibiotics and suddenly hes looking at a 12-14 week recovery.

If I remember, MM said repairing this ligament rather then removing it would mean a longer short term recovery but in the long run, much better for the knee.

I don't think he expected for Jordy Nelson and Jennings to break out and become huge weapons for AR. I think Finley (and perhaps his ego) thought he was someone who AR and Co. would simply step right back into where he was in 2010.

Essentially, Rodgers found out there is more then one toy in the box. It's encouraging to see Finley spending time and working with Rodgers this off season.
But we saw in the Bears game down here that when Finley is against a cover 2 team, he wrecks them. Without memorizing every game, my guess is teams played less cover 2 when Finley was inside, which meant that other guys were getting open. And it wasn't like they didn't get that much from the passing game when they didn't go to Finley.

Finley just needs to catch the ball. Rodgers will always have an open guy to throw to, and if you want to get it don't blow your opportunities.
