...this morning on Mike & Mike. I'll paraphrase: He says with Green Bay's glutton of WR talent and James Jones making 3 mil. per year, look for teams like Miami to make a big push to acquire Jones in a trade that may include a CB. He says Jones would probably be a #2 on other teams, and is no better than a #4 on the Packers. He also talked about Harrell as the backup and wouldn't be surprised to see them make a push for McCoy if the price was right. It will be interesting as over 700 players will be released in the next few days, and some good veteran talent available due to salary cap considerations.

Didn't Miami just trade away one of their starting CBs? If we're sending Jones somewhere and his perceived value is as a starting WR, then I imagine Thompson would want at least a Nickel CB if not a starter in return. Miami won't trade two starting CBs in an offseason...not in a division with New England. I imagine Miami would like to acquire Jones, they're hard up for WRs, but Thompson won't deal a solid rotational player for less than a sweet deal.

Clayton is showing his lack of knowledge here. Jones isn't "just the 4th WR", he plays a significant amount of time. They like to rotate receivers and sometimes play 4 and 5 receivers at a time. Jones isn't riding the pine being wasted.
I'd like to see JJ stay with the Packers through this contract (and maybe get an extension). Going 4 or 5 Wides with this group is just crazy difficult to stop.

That said, JJ has talent and a great contract. And if some team wants to overpay for his services, go for it. But I wouldn't trade him just to trade him. He has value in this offense. And he adds great depth as he could fill in at any of the WR positions.

Once they finally got to them, they had some decent segments this morning on M&M, and Clayton wasn't too outlandish. He made good points about Jones' role with the Packers, and how he could be #2 WR for a team in need. He may have been over-hyping Jones' talent for the purposes of his report, but he wasn't going all Gruden about him.
I still think the majority of these "insiders" look at a team's injury or depth circumstance at a particular position, look for other teams with the exact opposite situation, and 'create' trade rumors or similar speculations. I guess that is what "reporting" is these days.

I don't recall if it was Clayton or Schefter, but one of them made a point about trade value that was spot-on. Something along the lines of "teams have to build trade value for a player they are considering trading", and if there isn't value for both teams, a trade will never happen.
I do not think Miami will trade for any players. I think the plan down there is to be bad this year. Then with the very high pick they will have in next years draft they can draft a franchise QB type. That is why they are trading good players for draft picks so the will be bad and to have the picks to move up in the draft if needed to get the QB they want.
Heck they may want to trade a player to Ted at a bargin price to get some more picks.
James Jones is too productive and too valuable an insurance marker (in case of a 1-4 game injury to a WR) to give up for this offense. He may not be much on the open market, but he reduces a lot of risk with his presence in this offense with this set of WRs. In the last two games with Jennings out last year he caught 10 passes for 139 yds. with 2 TDs.
And yet another report of JJ trade:

Report:

quote:

According to the Sun-Sentinel, the Dolphins are trying to acquire wide receiver James Jones from the Packers.

Miami has been actively pursing receivers in a trade, and Green Bay’s James Jones is one of the players being targeted. Earlier this week Ireland said the second-round pick Miami got for cornerback Vontae Davis and the third-round pick the Dolphins acquired for trading Brandon Marshall to Chicago this offseason is β€œammunition” to make something happen.

Rumors involving Jones have been swirling for months, but a deal involving the former San Jose State star would’ve made a lot more sense in the spring. At this point, why would the Packers trade away a proven receiver? Not only is Jones having an excellent training camp, but 37-year-old Donald Driver is running on fumes and youngsters Diondre Borel and Tori Gurley haven’t developed into legitimate NFL players
