John Hadl, who had some success as a quarterback in the AFL and NFL until the Packers made a disastrous trade for him, has died at the age of 82.

Hadl was apparently an even bigger legend in college, or else Kansas was desperate to have a player considered great, since they retired his number.  Then again, he played both ways there and punted, which the senior members of this forum will recall was much more common back in the day.

If you all want to bitch about what a disaster it was for the Packers, go ahead.

He put up some huge numbers in Sid Gillman's offense in the 60s. For better or worse, he was one of a handful of qbs who took the passing game to a new level. Also obviously a role model to Bert, since he had about 6 million ints before #4 made it so fashionable.

I don't remember the details of the Hadl deal, but it cannot be worse than what the vikings did to get Herschel Walker. In any case, RIP John.

Hadl himself said this about the trade.  "I really didn't believe it.I didn't think anyone would be that desperate"

The Hadl trade is one of my first real memories of the Packers and it devastated everyone back then no one could believe it and I cannot remember any positive comments on it.  So anyhow the trade was for 5 draft picks.  1st and 2nd rounders in 75 and 76 and the 3rd round pick in 1975.

RIP John Hadl

Watched a "Peyton's Places" this week where he met up with Lance Alworth. He played catch with him while wearing a Chargers Hadl jersey.

Pretty good episode. I never knew Alworth was nicknamed Bambi. Makes sense when you watch him run.

Alworth was a fantastic WR but my Favorite WR from San Diego would be John Jefferson # 83 when he was with us. He could fly.
