Colinsworthless was setting up the one-on-one match-up for a while. Kept saying the shot down the field was coming after they could force the man coverage. When they shot came, Shields knocked the ball away.

Colinsworth just said, well if Ryan had the ball to throw again he would have thrown it higher for a better jump ball. If Ryan had that ball to throw again he might have looked to throw to someone who was open. Jones was smothered on that play. If that pass was just a little lower it would have been picked.
All I know is if my team had 48 points ran up on them in their house, I would use at least some of those picks to shore up the defense.

Besides, the Falcons' offensive playcalling is for $hit. Some teams have to run to set up the pass. ATL is one of them. If I had Michael Turner, I would use him to great effect. Then, I would have Matt Ryan become more of a game manager because a top-flight QB, he's not.
Atlanta fans have to be apoplectic now. The Braves, who looked like a shoo in for the wild card, collapsed (they have the Red Sox to thank for not being the laughing stock of major league baseball right now), and the Falcons, 13-3 and the #1 seed in the NFC just a year ago, are falling apart.

I'm enjoying seeing them suffer along with the Philadelphia faithful. Big Grin

Mularkey likes to throw it and they (ATL staff) seem to believe the media hype that Ryan is an elite QB. He is average at best beyond 15 yards. Reminds me of Dilfer.

You and me both, 'south! Of course I had to peruse the local rag's sports section to read the comments by "fans" on 3-4 different articles relating to the game. The overwhelming complaint is they're sick of the same ol' crap (sound familiar in Atlanta?), and it's time for answers. McKay and Dimitrioff (sp?) are being crucified; ditto for their OC/DC, and Smith is being questioned as the "correct" HC for their team.
The sad thing is, most of their fans are convinced they have the talent on the team to be a playoff-winning team, but it's their schemes/lack of adjustments/playcalling that's hurting them. It's about a 50/50 split on those who believe Stafford has the arm and/or smarts and the ones who refer to him as "Noodle Arm".
As an aside they printed Packers' Raji disses the Falcons, but convienantly forgot to include his quotes about their cheap shots tht preceded the rest. Comments are just atrocious; many comments about him being dead by 40 because he's so fat and similar.
Interesting comment from Football Outsiders on Ryan and Julio

Tom Gower: "I spewed about this on Twitter Friday night, but I feel like I'm actually sort of starting to figure Atlanta out. They coach like they mostly trust Ryan's ability to make pre-snap reads, but don't trust his ability to read and improvise post-snap."

They got out to the early lead because they were able to scheme successful plays that Ryan could execute (his second strength). The Jones draft pick was not because they wanted to change their identity as a team, but because it was the best way of maximizing the ability of Ryan's success on throws defined off the pre-snap reads.

We saw what happened when they tried to highlight Jenkins -- it didn't work. The throwing a lot to Jones early this year hasn't been highlighting Jones' ability or justifying his draft status -- rather it's that they now have two viable options for pre-defined throws based on the defensive look pre-snap."

Not sure how smart Matty is; when things are scripted, he does well- when he is on his own, he struggles

I don't think the ability or inability to improvise necessarily is a matter of pure intelligence.

One example: At one time, Brent could improvise with the best of them, and he had a low 20's Wonderlic. Not dumb, but no genius either.

Personality and damaged confidence could also be factors in the case of Matty Checkdown.
I don't think it's smarts, either - it's athletic ability, and Matty Choke lacks it. Improvisers buy themselves time to improvise with their legs. AR rolls out and always seems to have time to stop, or he creates enough room to be looking downfield while moving. Choke can't do that - he's too slow. AR can also throw just as accurately and with just as much juice on the ball while on the run - Matty throws ducks. I don't think it's a matter of Choke not knowing what to do, but rather that his talent is too limited to allow him to do it.
