Apparently Jason Kidd isn’t satisfied with just coaching, but he’ll have to be if he stays with the Nets.

According to a league source, Kidd recently approached ownership with a series of demands, including the role of overseeing the Nets’ basketball operations department in addition to his head coaching responsibilities. The source said Kidd didn’t want general manager Billy King to be dismissed, but wanted to be given a title and placed above him in the organizational hierarchy.

Ownership declined to grant Kidd that kind of power, which is rare for any coach in the league to have. The source said ownership felt Kidd wasn’t ready for that kind of responsibility after having only one year of coaching experience — the team finished his first season on the bench with a 44-38 record, good for sixth in the Eastern Conference — and allowed Kidd to seek other opportunities.

The franchise then was asked by the Bucks for permission to speak with Kidd about the prospect of hiring him, and the Nets allowed them to do so.

"Rocket Fuel malt liquor. Damn!"

Unbelievable.

How on earth is Jason Kidd remotely qualified to be a President of Basketball Operations or GM?

I don't even think he's qualified to be coach...but at least let a new GM or PoBO make that call.

If this happens, you can flush all the optimism associated with the new owners and Parker right down the toilet.

Interesting take on this "rumor" also....

Jason Kidd power move shows Bucks owners' inexperience

The Milwaukee Bucks' new owners stepped in a mess, blindsiding general manager John Hammond and coach Larry Drew by asking the Brooklyn Nets for permission to speak with their coach, Jason Kidd.

And though the Bucks' lame statement said, "We're not going to comment on rumors or speculation," the story was neither. The honeymoon might not be over for new owners Marc Lasry, a former Nets minority owner who is close to Kidd, and Wesley Edens, but they ruined dinner one night and the vacation is almost over.

They are not the first owners to take over a team and make a few missteps along the way. It happens. But it's interesting that these two savvy and smart people think that because they were able to protect secrets in one line of work think they can do so in the NBA.

They'll learn, sort out their internal mess and move on, likely with Kidd. And now the Nets are expecting to hire a coach for the second time in 13 months. Lionel Hollins is a front-runner, but George Karl could also have a chance, according to a person familiar with process.

Kidd's tenure in Brooklyn apparently will be short, as he is thought to have had a Bucks job in hand when he went to Nets executives — above general manager Billy King's head — and asked for control of basketball operations, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Jason Kidd power move shows Bucks owners' inexperience

Bucks offering a 2015 2nd and the Nets wanting a 1st. Kidd might have been worth a 1st (likely lottery) as a player in his peak, but now?

Updated:  Bucks are sending two second-round picks to Nets to secure coaching rights to Jason Kidd  --  the picks will be in 2015 and in 2018 or 2019.

Nothing wrong with the new owners wanting to put their own people in place, but the method of doing this was awkward. They let Larry Drew dangle while they did this and had they not gotten Kidd would have had to fire Drew and look for a new coach.

Also makes you wonder why they kept Hammonds.

Second round picks are inconsequential. The one in 2015 should be somewhere in the 37-45 range and by 2019 if they aren't in the playoffs in the East they'll just be blowing the whole thing up and starting over anyway.

Great players do not always make great/good coaches. It's still mind boggling to me why owners don't get this.

Not thrilled with his hire at all. Young, immature coach to go with a young, immature team. That rarely works out.

I really don't like this. Not that I valued Drew in some way- I actually had my doubts from the start.

But this stinks to high heaven. Hammond has done a pretty good job IMO assembling talent, recognized that they needed to blow it up last off-season, and has the franchise arrow (talent-wise) pointed up.

So here comes Kidd. Backs out of the Nets job because he doesn't get the President of Basketball ops title. Now he's only the coach in Milwaukee? He isn't going to get the pres title? How should Hammond feel about that?

And asking again- what the hell has Kidd done to deserve this? How is he qualified? This could be a disaster...

Then he'll become assistant NBA commissioner before moving on to run the next World Cup in Russia.  I think drunk driving and wife-beating is all good there, so it may be a natural fit.

like I said in the other thread, the Kidd news dumps a bucket of cold water on the positive vibe that the Bucks had going with the team sale and pick of Jabari Parker.

Now we get the reality slap, Jason Kidd, dirt bag supreme:

Wife-Beating, DUI, Low moral character, etc..... Nice job Bucks !!

I really like Hammonds but the reality is this- he bombed out on Alexander, gave away Tobias Harris for nothing, drafted Brandon Jennings and then hung him out to dry, and then signed or extended guys like Larry Sanders and OJ Mayo.   He's done nothing of significance to keep his job even if Kidd doesn't deserve it.

Larry Drew was dead man walking the minute he was hired.  He underachieved with a talented ATL team and was awful last year with Milwaukee.

it's a weird time right now in the NBA with coaching moves.   I am still puzzled by the Marc Jackson firing but the one article is right - seems like teams are trying to get younger, unproven former players to coach.  Kidd had his moments but his behavior and demands seemed a little bizarre.   Looks like the ownership is trying to make the team more marketable to free agents but I am not sure Kidd is going to put them over the top in that regard either

Well, the deal is free agents, they simply won have anything to sell for at least 2-3 years anyway. The core of your roster is two 19 year olds, a 20 year old, and a couple 23 year olds. No FA is coming to play with a team with an average age les than the Badgers' Final Four team...

Man, character counts for something, doesn't it?

http://www.ibtimes.com/brookly...-head-coach-1306795:

Among the question marks for Kidd is character issues from past incidents. He is currently scheduled to appear in court next week on charges relating to a DWI last year. In 2001, he pled guilty to a domestic abuse charge for assaulting his ex-wife Joumana. The couple divorced in 2007 with Kidd accused by his wife of “extreme cruelty” during their marriage. Joumana accused Kidd of other instances of abuse and accused him of” breaking one of her ribs and damaging her hearing after smashing her head into the console of a car.”

If the above is true, that is extreme.  Breaking a rib and smashing her head against something?

On top of that, bigtime unproven as a coach (the Nets were so veteran-laden, it is hard to qualify him for his one year tenure there).

Hey, maybe he rehabilitated, but with what little data I have come across, I hate the move.

Sounds to me real likely the Bucks handed the head coach position to a Class A Tool.

I always thought a nice cartoon would be Al Davis saying, "Just win, baby," while his back is turned to Lyle Alzado spiking himself full of steroids.

Yeah, thought that was telling. But it's also interesting that he "knows" him.

The kid can play. If Kidd can reach him, this team gets a lot better. It's frustrating trying to reach a guy like him, but if you can...
