"Saint" Tom Osborne sold his soul to recruit this guy to win him the first national championship. Phillips was enabled his whole life by guys like Tom Osborne and Dick Vermeil.

Osborne yes - he clearly sold his soul for Phillips.

Vermeil - not so much.  He tried to change him.  In November of his rookie year Vermeil demoted him to 2nd string for his inconsistent play and inability to stay clean off the field.  Phillips ran out of the facility missing the meetings and practice.  It wasn't long after that the Rams cut him.  Phillips left a ton of money behind by simply not showing up for workouts and things like that.  He had a heavily incentive based contract.  He earned very little of it.  The Rams were not going to simply hand him money without getting something for it.  Maybe this is the first time in his life Phillips had to EARN what he got.
