I like that VF had to say this isn't Cooter.

I watched that game. This is accurate.  He was getting swarmed by a deluge of Queens every time he dropped back.

In the second  qtr yesterday. Harrison Smith walked all the way from safety and got on the hip of the DE just outside the RT. Not only did Stafford not recognize Smith. After the snap, from the shotgun, he looked to his left the entire time. Smith got home with ease. Smith could have had road flares sticking out his ear holes and Stafford wouldn't have spotted him.

This went on for 4 or 5 consecutive series. Vikings DBs and LBs accounted for 4.5 of the 7 sacks.

That Lion line is a sieve but Matt Stafford has no ability to recognize a blitz. So Minny just ramped up the pressure and gave Matt a beating.

It would have been comical...if it weren't the Vikings doing the pummeling.

For some reason, I always liked the Lions.

Now, as far as the 90's team is concerned, I heard that the strength of the 1991 offensive line was its interior, especially guards Mike Utley and Eric Andolsek.  Everyone knows about Utley, having had an injury that paralyzed him.  It seems Andolsek has been largely forgotten.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Andolsek

Professional career

Andolsek would be selected by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 1988 NFL Draft.[2] He saw some action his rookie season, and would become a starter at left guard in his second season. For the next three years, Andolsek would remain a starter for the Lions, blocking for future Pro Football Hall of Famerunning backBarry Sanders.

In his final season, the Lions finished 12-4 and would make it all the way to the NFC Championship Game. However, the championship game was Andolsek's last football game.

Death

During the off-season, Andolsek was working in the yard of his Thibodaux home when a semi-trailer truck ran off the highway in front of his house and struck and killed him.[3] An investigation found the driver had taken his eyes off the road while using a towel to wipe his face.[4]

That's pretty unlucky stuff, losing the strength of the offensive line.

Another hit was the Lion's love for Scott Mitchell who played well replacing Marino the year he was out for the year after an achilles tendon injury I believe he suffered in the first regular season game.

Pretty unlucky team, I think.

**** HIM. He fired Vince's grandson.

Detroit's future is written by its' past.

They will attain levels of suckage that will allow them to get draft picks ranging from first to fifth for several years. After a few years, they will actually put a competitive team on the field, but never win anything meaningful. After a few years of this, the team implodes, and the circle of suck is completed.

Yeah, I remember reading that Mayhew was one of Millen's underlings when he got the job. Was a complete headscratcher when he got the job, but they did manage to build two 10+ win playoff teams. They got lucky hitting on a few guys like Suh, Fairley and Stafford (who is now ruined, he needs to be completely rebuilt). Hope they keep him, but he's probably not going to be around much longer.

All of this is great. Trying to picture a bunch of Lion guys sitting around a table in March trying to think of glorious and memorable Lion things to teach to the new kids so they understand the legacy they'll be expected to uphold.

But after a while all they can think of are all the times like Orlovsky running out of the end zone and the Silverdome selling for $580k and they all chuckle at the stupidity of it all until they remember Orlovsky came back to Detroit and replaced a completely ineffective Stat Padford last year and the Lions are paying Stat Padford $20 million each year...... Then **** get's real and they fully understand they are all just wasting time.

The fact that they had arguably two of the top 5 players of all time (Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson) at their respective offensive skill positions and still have won one playoff game (1-11 record) in the last 49 years is very hard to believe.

Barry Sanders won 1 playoff game in his career and Calvin Johnson went 0-2. How many first ballot HOFers since the playoffs expanded have played on teams like that?

For that matter, Calvin Johnson caught 78 passes for 1331 yards and 12 TDs for a team that went 0-16.

It's possible Johnson won't get into the HOF right away, but he was clearly that level of a player.
