This guy can flat out play. He's a rookie with an unlimited amount of potential, the sky is the limit here. Philly tested him early and Shields perfectly covered DeSean Jackson going deep BEFORE DJ got hurt. Then, on the last drive, T. Williams was on Cooper and we had a rookie on DeSean Jackson, who basically shut him down. What a fantastic job by everyone on defense, but my special kudos go to Sam Shields. I read the organization is extremely high on this guy, so am I. Sam (I AM a shut down corner) Shields!

He is the most under rated guy on the defense. Without him playing like he does I doubt we're even in the playoffs. For all the talk of the injuries on the defense the one place we couldn't afford one was the cornerbacks. The difference between him and Underwood and Lee is substantial and lets Woodson crawl into the box with reckless abandon.
I think Dom Capers gets a ton of love. But how 'bout some props to Darren Perry, Joe Whitt, Jr., Kevin Green and Mike Trgovac. Between the injuries to the d-line (Wilson, Green and Wynn) having to be filled to the multiple "who was that" LBers to the development of Shields, Peprah, etc.

Capers is a stud, but he seems to have some really great positional coaches!
Henry

I think he's played fantastic on so many levels: a rookie, a converted WR, needing to step in and be the third CB. I mean, to be an undrafted guy, he's just been lights out. Usually you hear the names of guys like him a lot. Not so with him, and that's a good thing for DBs.

It's not a slight against him. He obviously has a ton of raw talent. And he's learned a ton. I think with more work with JW Jr. and D. Perry, the skies the limit.
Why do we have to try so hard to give this guy a pat on the back? I highly doubt he needs it and I think every Packer fan is uber-happy to have him. There has been some substance to the comments that he is just a UFA. I think it's a rip on him that some feel the need to make excuses for him. He's a grown man, a very good DB in his first year and got the first playoff win of many under his belt.
It cannot be overstated what a great job the entire defensive staff has done this year. Kevin Greene, in particular, has been a spectacular addition to this team.

It cannot be overstated the value a pro's-pro like Woodson and, previously, Harris, has been toward the development of these young DB's. We all know the names, and all of them have improved measurably under Woodson and the coaches.
At worst, Shields will be a very good nickel back in the future, but he sure looks like he has the potential to be high level starter quality based on this season.

Maybe I'm wrong here, but I think this was only Shields 2nd season as a DB. He had 1 season in college, and now 1 in GB. Pretty amazing to be this good with that little amount of experience. From what I've seen, not only is he a really promising cover guy, he's not afraid to stick his nose in on a tackle either which is nice.
It's pretty unusual to have one starting caliber corner on your team that was undrafted, but to have two of your three top CBs play at a high level (undrafted players nonetheless) is unheard of.

You could make a case right now that there isn't a better CB in the NFC right now than Tramon Williams.

Sam Shields has played extremely well, and we're damn lucky to have him, but Williams is an elite level CB right now.

Every team needs 3 decent corners and we have them and a good cover safety in Collins.

If you chart some of the best DBs over the last couple of decades, the vast majority of them were taken early in the draft- i.e. rounds 1 or 2.

I always go back to what Madden once said. One main disagreement with Davis.

Importance by position.
Madden: 1)QB, 2)OT, 3)CB
Davis: 1)QB, 2)CB, 3)OT

Acquiring Williams and Shields is orgasmically sublime. There aren't even words.

Now, time to ratchet up OT...

he is basically the #2 CB on the team right now. Capers has Woodson in the slot most of the time.

The guy is already a starting CB in the NFL.
