In about 8th grade, circa 1960 we had a film strip ( the film always broke and needed to be scotched taped up, the projector was always run by the class nerd. This would be a dvd or download today) of Spahn throwing his curveball with a scientist explaining the physics as to why the ball did what it did. The best part was it was in super slo mo which blew away the kids in class.
Pitchers in the 1950's and1960's really were incredible, especially contrasted to the specialist roles of the era beginning in the 1970's, and continuing to this day.
Pitching complete games was a source of pride, and some duels (such as this one) are legendary.
And who doesn't remember reading about the Harvey Haddix/Lew Burdette battle with Haddix pitching a 12 inning perfect game (only to lose it in the 13th!) as a kid?
