This.

I don't know what the point of that post was.

As for Murphy, I guess Im just indifferent to him. I don't see that he's done alot for the organization one way or the other. I mean he inherited one hell of a staff and I guess to his credit, he's fairly hands off.

But would it be that much of a loss if he left?
Murphy went and made the offer to Favre to protect his legacy. Murphy at least had the foresight that it could get ugly and wanted to protect that for FAvre. Favre had a 20 million dollar offer to stay in good graces with Packer Nation but he spat on Murphy, the Packers, and the fans. Favre responded to the gesture with "Let ne worry about my legacy". Well his legacy is tarnished, he may never be honored like he should have been .
The premise is that Murphy acted as the de facto owner of the Packers. I don't think Murphy did anything different than other owner would do. For instance, Wayne H. was also in this difficult position in Miami in 2000.

I have the recollection that Favre's retirementcould have been very similar to Dan Marino's. Granted, the latter never had a championship to his name. For example, I believe the dolphins offered a contract similar to the $20 million one mentioned above by FloridaRob to Marino. I believe Marino accepted it, but I have not been able to verify that. (I'm not talking about the 2004 thingy)

Note that Marino was also offered to close out his career with the Vikings:
Marino says no to Green

He declined that offer which was exactly the opposite to what Favre did.

I think Murphy did what others had tried to do passify the forced retirement of an aging legend. One big difference was that Favre never cooperated. I don't think the Packers are in terrible shape during Murphy's tenure. I'm not down on him by any means.

Favre had probably his best season of his career the season prior. I don't think it was that obvious that he was an aging legend that was at the twilight of his career. He might have had that thought to treat him like past QBs had when they were done, but he obviously wasn't done physically or from a talent standpoint. You might be able to make the argument that mentally he wasnt there anymore.. but I dont see the Marino situation and the Favre situation the same way. It was more like, we have a PR disaster on our hands, what is the easiest way we can make this go away.
