These are why these SB debates are so frustrating when you look at what Belichick and Brady have accomplished compared to the rest of the league. Marty was a great coach, an all time great, but he just never got his team over the hump unfortunately. The discussion is always centered around what he didn't do instead of what he did, which is a lot. Andy Reid was well on his way to this territory as well, but fortunately he was handed a generational talent at QB and that got him over the hump. I would have loved to seen what a Martyball team would look like with Aaron Rodgers or Patrick Mahomes, would have been outstanding. Great coach, one of the best ever. His coaching tree is legendary with Bruce Arians, Bill Cowher, Tony Dungy, and Mike McCarthy all winning SBs and other good position coaches/coordinators like Herm Edwards, Art Shell, Wade Phillips, Tony Sparano, and others.
Believe he gave Pittsburgh Macho his first pro job.
RIP
In his final year as a head coach, he went 14-2.
In the first playoff game, they played the Patriots and were ahead 21-13 when the Patriots went for it on 4th and 5 with about 6 minutes left. Brady threw a pick and the DB was stripped of the pick after returning it about 5 yards and the Patriots recovered. If he knocks the ball down, they get the ball at the 41. If he falls down when he gets the pick, they have it at the 31. Instead, this happens. Instead of being in position to drive for a game-clinching FG, the Patriots score and get the 2-point conversion and then win on a FG with 1 minute left.
14-2 and losing largely because of a freak play in a playoff game gets you fired.
This is why Peppers told HHCD to take a powder on that INT. Right or wrongly.
Instead of being in position to drive for a game-clinching FG,
Gary Anderson could tell you a thing or two about such game-clinching FGs.
I always admired Schotty. He was well spoken and treated everyone with respect. Was on the receiving end of many brutal playoff losses.
A lot of people remember the Chargers and Chiefs debacles but it doesnβt get worse than βThe Driveβ or βThe Fumbleβ with Cleveland. 4th and 26 was bad as was the Seattle meltdown but damn.
I always enjoyed the NFL Films clip where he is asking his player if he knew he had his earrings in (or close to that). It always reminded me of being an analog man in a digital world (much like myself).

I hope Earnest Byner is not a pallbearer.
