Before you get to wound up about Stone, read this

Stone wasn’t denied entry into UW. Nor was he admitted. Sources said Stone wanted to play for UW but the admissions department was waiting to see if there was an upward trend in his academics before making a decision, causing Stone to become frustrated with the process and pull the plug.

Another Wisconsin apologist type article.

Did the University actually pay Oates to write that article??  How lame considering he's made a career out of covering athletics at the school.

I am not upset one bit anymore about Diamond Stone's decision to go to Maryland.   It's his choice and if he was being jerked around I can't say I blame him.   But when he drops 30/15 on them and the fans - many of them that pay top tier ticket prices to watch at Kohl Center decide to voice their displeasure about a local kid working them over - good luck with that UW.

This premise that a school has to sell their soul academically to win at the highest level has proven to be a false, Mr. Oates.  Just wait until Michigan is playing once again on a national stage for a college football title.  You think their academic reputation will take a hit?  Hardly.  And they don't don't reside in the SEC - at least the last time I checked.

The level of arrogance to me is mind boggling.  It's great that the Badgers are competitive but when you view the revenue generated by the athletic department the fans have a right to demand and expect more.  If not, then don't soak them through prices and fees and membership duties affiliated to supporting the program.

UW wants to think they are in the big time - and there's no reason why they can't compete for national titles in the major sports.  They have great fans and facilities and an economic model that is sustainable.  However,  this "we're better than everyone else" mentality is getting old and it's time to lower expectations that match their dinasour age mindset.

You can still have great academics and great athletics.

"You can still have great academics and great athletics."

Are suggesting that they wall off the athletes from the academics? Or that the academics keep the athletes around as a sort of fun little pet to be enjoyed on weekends?

I like that they stepped up in the final minute to tie the game. Trimble with a "nothing you can do about that" 3 to win... Keep plugging guys... but you better start getting some Ws or it's NIT time...

If they play like this in most games, it's a win.

Maryland is a collection of athletes, with an NBA starting-level point guard.  I'm not sure they'll make a Final 4 run without some tougher defense.

Diamond Stone is a physical specimen, but his defense at this age is indifferent at best and he looks like a future NBA backup 4/5. He's got all the physical tools, but I'm not sure he'll be ready next year to play against guys his own size. I'm not sure how much he'd have helped Wisconsin this year, but he's a great complimentary piece for a team like Maryland where he doesn't need to be THE GUY.

They have almost no chance to get to the NCAA tournament. You figure they'd need at least a .500 record in the Big10 to get an invite which would mean an 8-5 record the rest of the way in the Big10. With 2 games against MSU and games at Maryland and at Iowa, that almost means running the table against the rest of the conference. That isn't happening.

The question might be whether they can win enough games to get into the NIT. They are 9-8 with 14 games left (including the first game of the Big 10 tourney). 7-7 will get them into the NIT, 6-8 will not if you figure you need a winning record to get an invite.

They have 2 games against MSU and will be at Iowa and at Maryland. Those are almost sure losses which means they have to go 7-3 in the other 10 games. They have 5 home games of that 10 (Indiana, Ohio State, Nebraska, Illinois, Michigan).

The remaining road games are at Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Illinois, Minnesota and the opening tourney game.

Bottom line - it's going to be a tough road just to make the NIT. The losses to Western Illinois and Milwaukee were huge there. Instead of 7-7 to make the NIT, they'd only need to go 5-11 the rest of the season to get an invite.

Was at the game, 1st time to watch the men play.  Had a great time even with the loss. Bronson had a tough game and Vitto Brown should not be starting let alone the 1st off the bench.   One of the best things is that for Christmas I received the book Why Not Wisconsin  by Matt LePay.  I was able to get him to sign the book. Pretty cool guy.
