Actor who memorably played a game of chess against Death in Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal dies a month before his 91st birthday
Von Sydow had a long career in both foreign films (Wikipedia says he made 11 with Bergman, and he's also in the very good The Emigrants with Liv Ullmann) and Hollywood. In Hollywood he played Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told and the devil in a pair of movies; other villains included Blofeld in Never Say Never Again and Ming the Merciless in the 1980 Flash Gordon.
He acted almost right up to the end of his life, appearing in a couple of episodes of Game of Thrones and the 2015 Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Oh, and he has one more film in post-production that I think is getting a release later this year.
