a.k.a. SCORE MORE POINTS!!!

Before the season ESPNWisconsin's Jason Wilde asked McCarthy about the tweaks to the running game...

ESPN Wisconsin: You’ve said that...you’ve made some changes schematically.

McCarthy: Let me ask you something: How come no one ever asks about how many points we score?

ESPN Wisconsin: What do you mean? You led the league in scoring in 2011 and last year you were still fifth even though your kicker went through a period where he couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn.

McCarthy: I mean, isn’t it about scoring points?

He doesn't need his defense to stop the other team on every drive, just stop enough drives so that his offense can run more plays than their opponent and... SCORES MORE POINTS!!!

I agree Boris ... I'm still amazed that a guy like Hawk is still on the defense. Its like we are content for our Defense to be the running game and run clock while Offense does its best to get off the field (And a lot of times while putting up points). Mind boggling.

I think that works during the season just fine because of attrition across the league but come playoffs vs. good teams ....

Sometimes I ponder what a top5 Defense(holding to sub-20 points) and a scoring machine would be like?

Think about how rare that is, in the present age (salary cap) of football.  Maybe I am wrong, but I can't think of one team, that had a Top 5 defense (like the 2000 Ravens) or an offense like the 99 Rams.

Not 100% true ... sometimes the point on offense is to run clock and keep the ball away from the opposing offense. The furthest thing from their mind( or should be) at that point is scoring points. EDIT: Actually the furthest thing should be penalties and fumbling but I digress ...

You right, I would agree, but it's rare, I guess the point I was trying to make.  It's hard to pay the "best" players on both O and D, and still have quality players around.  We have alot of $$$ wrapped up into AR and CMII (rightfully so) but the players around them over the next few years are probably going to be lesser talented/inexperienced. There is nothing wrong with that, just makes it difficult to have a Top 5 O and D at the same time.
