#Packers release DE Phillip Merling and activate DE Mike Neal. This also means that Neal can play tomorrow vs. #Colts.

Notebook: Neal ready after good practice week
packersnews.com

Weston Hodkiewicz om Friday, October 5th, 2012

Known for his tenacious workout approach, Neal has impressed McCarthy, Capers and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac in practice despite his monthlong layoff, which he split between working out in Tampa, Fla., and back home in Indiana watching his three younger brothers play football.

“He’s had a good week of practice,” Capers said. “You can tell he’s kept himself in good shape. There’s some things we’ll have to talk about. We have this game management meeting and we’ll have to see how Mike feels and go from there, but I’ll say this — he’s come back and had a good week of practice.”

“Mike’s a little bit different than a lot of guys. Mike’s never out of shape,” Trgovac said. “Football conditioning, it’s one of those deals where you might not be able to play him a bunch of plays in a row. He may tire a little bit faster than somebody else or he’s going to be carrying pads that he wasn’t carrying when he was working out at home or wherever he was working out.

“On Wednesday, we gave him a certain amount of reps and Thursday we beefed it up a little bit and beefed it up every day. He seemed to handle it pretty well.”

Past the click there's a bunch more notes on Starks, some of the injuries, and what primetime show Aaron Rodgers will have a segment on this Sunday.

Steam will do that... or something else.
I don't give a **** what kind of football shape he is in. The guy has been glass joe since he was drafted. Just get out there and play and stop making excuses for the guy.

Mike Neal is like the vintage Italian sports car that looks great sitting in the garage but the damn thing never runs right and you just end up getting POd as a result.
Neal was a 2nd round pick if I remember right, which I may not. It's interesting (and at times annoying) how many chances a guy gets simply by virtue of where he was drafted. Ugh. Also interesting that it took all week to decide he was marginally better than Merling, who has also been invisible for 4 games.

Typically NFL teams wait to make roster moves until the latest time possible. Should another defensive lineman end up hurt during the week Merling would be kept.
At the bottom of the Jsonline blog it talks as though Neal may not be active as the team has to make a decision between Neal and Daniels being active.

Yes right like GB puts Neal on the 53 man roster but not on the 45 man game day roster ............

I kinda surprised Merling got the axe but anyhow I think that MM likes to utilize these type of moves for motivation showing non starters that if you make an impact you will play.

I hope it turns out good for GB.

So GB waits till the last minute to cut Merling and if by chance another Dline goes down on Sunday then GB could just rip up the notice they gave Merling? And he is not subject to the waiver wire?
be nice to get a good rotation going with Raji, Neal, Wilson and Worthy. I've noticed Pickett playing a lot of NT when he's in while Raji is at the 5 tech. According to PFF, Raji has played 139 snaps at DE while only playing 53 at NT. Pickett, meanwhile, has played 79 snaps at NT.

Merling's on waivers now. The Packers had until 3:00 PM today to make a decision on Neal. They waited until that time in case during the week someone went down with an injury in practice/fell down a flight of stairs/got arrested/found jesus and went on a pilgrimage. May as well wait until you have to to make a move. Never know what's going to happen.

thought this part was interesting:

B.J. Raji was fined $7,875 for an unnecessary roughness penalty against New Orleans. Raji did not even have to cut a check. He found the exact change under his sofa cushions and in a few discarded pizza boxes.

Neal has Lucas Electrics? Confused
Uncharacteristic of MM to play a guy who has not practiced for a month right away. From all reports Neal looked much better in preseason this year & staff may think that he has really "turned the corner"....let's hope so!!

Yes you're right of course. I'm just a little tired of Neal'a lack of production ;-)
I don't understand the frustration with Neal. Would you rather have a guy on the team like Merling, who produces 1 tackle and 1 assist in 4 games (and likely doesn't get any better)? Or a guy like Neal, who has a chance to develop into a very good player if he stays healthy? I'd say keep Neal 10 times out of 10, until you realize that he won't ever reach his potential. As soon as the coaching staff can say he's reached his peak and it's not high enough, cut him. But until then, keep him on the team. Last thing you want is for Neal to reach his potential for another team.

And for those that think TT is only keeping him b/c of draft position, just look at Brian Brohm. Brohm sucked, TT and MM knew it, and he was gone after 1 year.

And I just saw that Daniels is inactive today, meaning Neal is active. Hope he's ready to play today.
