Green Bay -- Here are the highlights from coach Mike McCarthy's Monday press conference:

WR Donald Driver feels good today and it doesn't appear he'll miss a game.
RB Ryan Grant is cleared for this week.

Very happy for Jordy Nelson getting new contract. "He's earned it. Looking forward to many yhears to come with Jordy Nelson."

Pass protection was a plus. Guard did a good job helping tackles. Marshall Newhouse had a setback on a couple plays, but thought he was solid.

On QB pressure: We're getting better. There was a lot of slipping yesterday, we need to improve on that.

Technique-wise we need to improve on things on defense and special teams.
Offense played at a very high level.

Broncos ran ball better than he would have liked. He expects Atlanta to try to seize on things other teams have done well against them.

Isn't looking at what Detroit has done. He's more interested in his team.
Focus is improving each week.

RE: slipping. Odd.

Good news on DD and Grant. maybe we'll have a week where we actually get a starter or 2 back.

GBPG's coverage:

Ryan Grant has been cleared and will likely practice on Wednesday, said Packers coach Mike McCarthy at his Monday press conference.

Grant suffered a kidney bruise a week ago against the Chicago Bears and didn’t play against Denver yesterday.

Other highlights from McCarthy’s press conference:

*Donald Driver should be fine. He isn’t in danger of not playing on Sunday vs. Atlanta.

*I don’t pay attention to the Lions. My focus is on the Packers.

*Must look for indicators to make sure you’re headed in right direction. How you react and handle adversity and success, keeping football team headed down the road. We’ve done number of studies on handling success. Mike Eayers presented a study. It comes with different levels, not just winning Super Bowl. It’s handling day to day, week to week, improving quality of play. Studies can go from Fortune 500 companies to a lot of different directions. Use power point presentations.

*Very happy for Jordy Nelson personally on his new contract. He’s earned everything he has accomplished to this point. Looking forward to many years to come with Nelson. Very happy that his contract is done.

*Business part of football is always a challenge. Thats’ really focus of Ted Thompson and Russ Ball. We stick to football side of it. We have daily conversations with management about players, contracts, etc. How coaching staff feels about players is ongoing discussions. From that financial piece is put together. Otherwise, coaches coach.

*Pass protection right now is a plus. Aaron did good job of extending plays. Guards helped tackles. Was happy with Marshall Newhouse.

*General pressure, we’re getting better. Lot of slipping yesterday on both sides of ball. Something we need to improve on. Technique wise we need to clean some things up on defense.

*I stay in tune with how pass defense is broken down. We played with lead for most part. Definitely things we’ll see, based on success people have had against our defense, and that’s what we’ll prepare for.

Here is a Q&A from Packers.com

MM on the tempo of the offense:

Q. You talk a lot about tempo. Do you set a tempo limit?

A. In practice, you try to go as fast as you can, but you also have other elements. If the play doesn't go right in practice, you're going to repeat it. Otherwise, it's really the urgency of getting in and out of the huddle.

There's a time frame we operate in at practice and if we don't repeat any plays, we should be in the plus category. If the practice is scheduled for two hours and nine minutes and we don't have any plays repeated, we should clearly finish practice in less than two hours. If we exceed our time frame, then our management is not intact as far as getting the play called, getting in and out of the huddle, having the scout team set, transitioning to special-teams drills, etc.

I keep track of our operation based on how long we're on the field. The operation is not just from the time you call the play until the time you get to the line of scrimmage, it's also how you transition from drill to drill. Urgency is not only a physical action, it's a mental action and it's very important to monitor. When your team is not operating with urgency in practice, it's not going to play with urgency on Sundays.

During games, we have everything charted, offense, defense and special teams.

We play close attention to the management of the clock, from play entry, huddle break, arrival at the line of scrimmage and snap of the ball.

Some referees wind the clock a little quicker than others and some umpires don't spot the ball as quickly as others. It's human nature, so that's all part of our game-planning.

We look at the officials we have each week because it's important to have an understanding of their tendencies. If we aren't operating as fast as we should, pre-snap penalties can become a factor.

RE: slipping. Odd.
.

I wonder if he means slipping in regards to footing. It did look like the field was rather soft an folks were loosing their footing at times. Maybe the β€œneed to improve on that” was targeted at field maintenance. (Or maybe I’m reading between the lines too much).

That's how I took it. There might be some discussion about grounds crew and also equipment guys in getting the right cleat size for the conditions. Maybe it comes down to a specific sort of footwork issue that he means, but I assume it is turf or shoes.

Packerboi, Thanks for always doing this. I've started coming here looking for your posts instead of going to news sites.

Did you see the one about Finley having to talk with McCarthy because he only had 3 catches Sunday? Love him and hope they sign him, but don't tell me every week they score 50 points and a W, that if the guy doesnt get more than 3 catches he's going to be a pain.
