As we all wait in breathless anticipation of the greatest day of the sporting year - the NFL Pro Bowl, I thought it would be fun to present data on some QBs and have you tell me (WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP):

1.  Which QB you think is the best of the group (poll below)

2.  Which QB you think is the worst of the group (poll below)

3.  If you can, name the QBs.

Best & worst is subjective with the data we have here.

I chose "G" as the best & "D" as the worst.

"G" as "best" because, I'd prefer a lower INT rate while having one of top 2 in TD/16G & top 3 in Completion %.

"D" as "worst" because, lowest TD %, lowest completion % & nearly 1 INT every game. Also has the worst QB rating.

No idea who I chose or what year these stats came from.

From what I can tell....Favre, Russell Wilson & Kappy are not in the list. Neither is Starr, Manning or Brady.

I'm not going to lookup Dickey, Wright, Whitehurst, Hadl, Majik. From the averages there is no way Rodgers is in the list. Neither is flynn, cutler or Tolzien.

Unless my math is fuzzier than yours. I give up.

A - John Elway

B - Dave Krieg
C - Carson Palmer
D - Kerry Collins
E - Jon Kitna
F - Boomer Esiason
G - Donovan McNabb
H - Jeff George

I've always wondered why John Elway is always a "No doubt" Top 5 QB of all time, when he was rarely a Top 5 guy in the era he played.  Threw for 4000 yards once.  Never threw more than 27 TDs.  Didn't have that crazy of a TD to INT ratio - 1.3 to 1.  He played in an era where QBs were producing greater numbers than him, so it's not like I'm looking at today vs Johnny Unitas.

In his 16 years he finished in the top 5 in the NFL in :

CMP% - 2x

Yards - 4x

TD passes - 3x

QB Rating - 4x

Good?  Sure.  Great?  Not really.  Easily proclaimed as one of the best QBs of all time.  NFW.

I guess you can say his Broncos won a lot of games.  But, he played when the AFC was considerably weaker.  The AFC won exactly 2 Super Bowls in his 16 years, and those were of course Denver on the strength of Terrell Davis.  He got curb stomped the other 3 games where he threw 2 TDs and 6 INTs, and even in the 2 wins he threw 1 TD and 2 INTs.

He's basically no different than Boomer Esiason except Esiason played 50 fewer games so his counting stats aren't as high.

Awesome. I picked worm - burner McNabb. At least I picked Kerry Collins the "worst" & out of that list I'm comfortable with that choice.

I figured out "A" was Elway. For the life of me I couldn't figure out the other QBs & now I see why. I agree Elway isn't a "Top 5" QB.

In no particular order. Top 5 QBs.

Marino / Otto Graham / Unitas / Favre / Manning

We're talking QB play here not team achievements like Championships or wins. Looking back at history until today, that's a very solid list of 5 QBS that I feel are the best ever to play the QB position.

Yeah, I didn't think so.  I am thinking the list has folks like Unitas, Jurgenson, and maybe Starr.

Oops!

I like the first three, but for me Montana >>> Manning and Favre.

I think I would go with the first three and throw in Montana and Sonny Jurgenson.

64 year career? Must be Blanda.

I didn't know they were career stats. No where did it say that.

I knew someone would say Montana which is why I mentioned QB play & not team achievements. Montana's stats are pedestrian compared to Favre & Manning & he had unbelievable teams around him with HOF players at multiple positions. Put Favre and/or Manning on those Niner teams & they might have won 10 straight Super Bowls.

Jurgenson very good, not top 5. Longevity plays a part too IMO

From 1981-1990, the 49ers scoring defense was ranked in the top 4 in the NFL in points allowed in 8 of the 10 years.  They were 8th in 1988 (one of the SB years) but were only #3 in yards allowed and as a team they were #4 in turnover ratio that year, so it was a good defense.

The only bad defense he played with was 1982 (23rd scoring, 21 yards, 25th takeaway ratio).  The 49ers were 3-6 that year.

That defense had a great run and deserves at least as much credit as Montana.  What would Rodgers (or Favre, or Elway, etc) have done with a decade of great defense?

Boris,

That's why for me these are fun discussions.  I admit to having a fondness for Jurgenson.

As to Montana?  Can't see him EVER throwing a 6 int playoff game as Favre did against the Rams.  Can't see him throwing the int's Favre threw in two conference championships (Packers versus Giants and Vikings versus Saints).

Just me, but I cannot place anyone Top 5 who made those kind of horrific mental decisions in huge moments - and I cannot see Montana coming close to that kind of mentally-lacking mistaken decision-making football.

He sure had a great team around him though -AND- has a different perception had the Bengal DB intercepted the pass he threw.

As to Manning.  Playoff performances too often too not all that good.
