Griffin and it's not close. The Pistons were going to suck with Williams or Phil Jackson or Red Auerbach.

Monty Williams would have probably been fine as the Bucks coach. His problem was that he never wanted to the Pistons job and they gave him an offer he couldn't refuse. I remember his introductory news conference where he basically said he didn't want the job but they offered so much money that he couldn't say no. There is really very little difference between him and Doc Rivers. Most of the NBA coaches are like them - mostly competent and interchangeable. Rivers, Williams, Nurse, Bud, Donavan, Vogel, etc. Nurse is the best example. Nick Nurse looked like a complete idiot, then a genius, and then a complete idiot all within the span of 18 months. He somehow missed the playoffs with Van Vliet, Siakam, and Scottie Barnes; then looked like a genius when Embiid was healthy with the Sixers; then looked like he was coaching the Pistons when Embiid was out.

Griffin might have been OK with a young roster and no expectations whatsoever. He'd have certainly made it the entire year and would have probably won more games than Williams did just because Williams' demeanor on the bench all year came across as "I can't believe I sold out to coach this team after having just been in the Finals two years ago with an actual team with a chance." Griffin would have been just happy to have a job and would have worked with the young guys and had them playing hard.

The amount the Knicks gave up for Bridges is insane.

It’s likely they lose Hartenstein and very well could cost themselves out of retaining OG Anunoby if they want to stay under the first apron of the cap.   If Anunoby gets more than around 30M per year they will exceed the cap - if they choose to retain their two 1st rounders this year.

So, if they gain Bridges but lose Bogie and Hartenstein and Anunoby I’m not sure how that makes them any better.

Bogdanovic can't guard anyone.

I bet they keep Hartenstein and Anunoby. Especially Anunoby.

Adebayo gets a 3 year, 166 million dollar extension from Miami.

50M+. year for a guy that basically averages 19 and 10 and isn’t a versatile scorer.  That’s nuts.  I know he’s 26 and an All Star but he’s not elite.

It helps the Lopez trade market though.  25M all of a sudden looks a lot better and Lopez can shoot.

Anunoby gets 5 years and 212 million. Makes Adebayo look like a bargain.

Kudos to the Knicks for making it happen but man that’s a lot of money for OG.  He’s basically getting 80% of a max contract for being about half of a max contract player.   His best season was 17/5 and while he’s an OK 3pt guy he’s not a great FT % or rebounder for his size.  He’s also had some injury issues throughout his career.

Knicks able to do this because Brunson isn’t making much and Bridges is still on a team friendly deal this year at next for around 25M.

Not sure if they still plan to keep Randle or not but Knicks will be very competitive next year.  Perhaps not as good as Boston but certainly at the level of Milwaukee or better.

Hartenstein leaves the Knicks to go to OKC. 3 years and 87 million is a lot of money for a guy who just had a career year averaging 8 points and 8 rebounds, can't shoot 3s, and can be exploited on the perimeter on switches. He's basically a younger version of Brook Lopez that can't shoot. It makes the Lopez contract look like a bargain.

The problem is that the places that would want Lopez in a trade are drying up. The Grizzlies drafted Edey. The Blazers drafted Clingan. OKC has their guy now.

A Lopez trade probably is down to the Spurs, Rockets, or Lakers now. Maybe a move to the Spurs for Keldon Johnson would make sense for everyone?

Lock everyone up long-term and then get out to avoid the extreme luxury taxes that are coming? 206 million for their 5 starters. I think they are all signed for 2-3 more years.

Tatum 60 million

Brown 50 million

Holiday 34 million

White 32 million

Porzingis 30 million

Celtics are going to be an interesting case study in this new CBA era. They locked up their starting 5 through 2025-2026. They're over the second apron each of the next 3 seasons. I haven't memorized the rules but everything I've heard is that most teams are treating it like a hard cap b/c once you're over, the non-financial penalties are devastating. You can do almost nothing to change your team. No MLE or signing players on buyouts. Trades are nearly impossible. Zero flexibility. Your team is your team. I think that makes sense for the Celtics for next season but after that, it gets super risky with Holiday in his mid 30s and Porzingis being a major injury risk.

On the flip side, the Nuggets are treating the second apron like a hard cap, hence letting KCP walk. It'll be a few years before we see what the right strategy is with this new CBA.

Boston is basically pushing all their chips in for the next few years.  The good news for them is they got a ring this year.  The bad news is that Philly and New York have essentially closed the gap and if the Bucks can stay healthy they should be right in the mix as well.  Cleveland and Orlando and Indiana should be decent and with a move here or there Miami can get back into contending status.   Simply put, it won’t ever get any easier for Boston than it did this year.

They also will have to deal with the Minnesota, OKC, Denver, etc that survives the West if they are good enough to advance to the finals again. The East may not be favored in the finals again until the last 2020's.

OKC is going to be really, really good for along time, for the same reason that Boston is good now. A massive trade where a desperate team gave up way too much draft capital (and, more importantly in this case, SGA). So far, they've gotten SGA, another likely All-Star (Jalen Williams). They still have Dillon Jones coming (drafted this year), and two more draft picks/swaps coming, plus they flipped the Jaquez JR. pick for Miami's first round pick next year (which could be very good) and another 2nd round pick.

  • Clippers received: Paul George
  • Thunder received: Danilo Gallinari, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, 2021 first-round pick (became Tre Mann), 2022 first-round pick (became Jalen Williams), 2023 first-round pick (became Jaime Jaquez Jr.), 2023 first-round pick swap, 2024 first-round draft pick (became Dillon Jones), 2025 first-round pick swap, 2026 first-round pick

I was curious when the Bucks summer league team would play and who was going to be on it. Out of habit (based on over 25 years), I logged onto ESPN and went to look for summer league information. Here's what showed up on the page as highlights when I opened it.

After this I did go to nba.com where I found pretty much immediately that the Bucks first summer league game is in Vegas on the 13th against the Bulls. There were no articles about Bronny James on the nba.com page that were immediately visible.

As others have pointed out, it's not the NBA pushing this ridiculous Bronny narrative, it's ESPN.

Oh hell yeah. You don't have to talk about LeBron and the Cowboys if you work at ESPN. You do have to if you want to continue to work for ESPN.

Giannis was playing Doncic in an Olympics qualifying game last week. It barely got mentioned.

ESPN Programming Priorities

1. LeBron

2. Cowboys

3. Aaron Rodgers

4. NY Knicks

5. What does Stephen A. Smith think about LeBron, the Cowboys, Rodgers, and the Knicks.
