I don't know about you guys, but I really like the Mike McCarthy we've seen over the past two months. In McGinn's chat at the JSO this morning he said:

quote:
Based on having seen Tomlin in action at SB two years ago, I would say he seems a tad tighter this year. He didn't seem as fun as he was in February 2009. McCarthy, meanwhile, has had a ready smile, an easy laugh and, in talking to many writers, has come across very, very well. I ran into him Friday morning in the period after his final presser and he looked amazingly loose.

Just look at how prepared, at ease, and most importantly, confident he has been during the playoff period. He's saying stuff like this, from after yesterday's practice:

β€œThe one thing you want to see in your football team is that the players have maintained confidence throughout the process. Our guys have done that. They totally believe what’s in front of them. They believe in what they’ve seen on film. We respect Pittsburgh, but we feel that this is our time and Sunday will be our night."

Good on him. I get a vibe of quiet confidence from this team and it all starts with MM.

Okay, I was duly horrified by the first unedited English-teacher's-nightmare mission statement MM put out when he arrived. But I've come to appreciate the intelligence and wisdom in his coaching without needing him to be an English major (and that's not easy for me to say!) and feeling a lot warmer and fuzzier about him these days (see "I was wrong" thread), I decided to use my skills to try to polish it up for him while keeping as close to his sentences/intentions as possible, and darned if the guy hasn't done pretty much exactly what he said he'd do!:

The foundation for the new direction of the Green Bay Packers will be constructed with three key components: obtaining "Packer People", creating stable structure, and concentrating on character and chemistry.

A positive environment will be created with leadership that keeps its eye on the target of establishing a championship football team.

To this end, there will be constant communication to ensure that everyone is on board. We will attack this challenge with energy and enthusiasm to overcome the obstacles that we will encounter.

The resources and tradition which cause this organization to stand in the forefront of professional sports organizations will enhance our path to this vision.

I am honored and privileged to have the opportunity to lead the Green Bay Packers on a new journey back to the pinnacle that bears the name of Coach Lombardi.
I have always liked MM. I like his story, background and style. I was critical of him many times because there were games where he could have done better. But the last couple months have seemed to enable him to achieve the potential we all suspected and caught glimpses of over the past several seasons.

This is his day and his team's too. Let's hope they all make the most of it.

GO PACKERS!
